Sadly I am just seeing this today. As a young NCO, I looked up to Gunny and sought his advice often He taught me a lot about leadership, lessons I still use today.

i know this is years beyond my father's passing but I am his oldest child, Annette. I met my half brother and sister and my stepmom (all angels in my life) only after his passing. I would give anything to hear stories of his days as a marine. I have only had the opportunity to meet the sheriff's deputies he worked with. please contact me if possible [email protected].

Gunny Garipy was my Drill Instructor at Parris Island. He definatly was a hard charger and motivator. I had a chance to see him in the fleet and he was still the motivated person i knew. I wished i could have had a chance to talk to him again but i know he is smiling down on Marines. RIP Drill Instructor Sgt Garipy

Greg was a very close friend to me. We served in the Marines together. His wife and Greg are the god parents to my daughter. Though it has been almost 20 years, I still remember him dearly.

I was in Gariepy's Platoon 2000 class at Parris Island. He was by far a tough as nails Drill Instructor and I certainly got no slack which I appreciated despite both his and the seniors wondering how I would far in the fleet marines. I know it's a bit belated but despite my rough start in boot camp I credit Gariepy for training me to later make it where I made it. Namely Recon training, Machine Gunner in a CAAT team, and later a meritorious promotion to Corporal. You have to think on your feet and have a thick skin which this drill instructor was good at making. I had always wondered what came of him and I didn't know until I did the search today.
I will pray for his family.

I have thought about you a lot since I first heard of your death. At the time, I was so new on the grief journey as I had just lost my beloved son on April 24th, just two short months before you were killed. My son Officer Larry Lasater was fatally shot while serving with the Pittsburg (CA) Police Department. When I heard you were also a Marine, I knew that you were his kindred soul. Larry loved the Corps and he too led by example. You were a D.I, and his last active duty assignment was as a Series Commander at the Depot in San Diego. When I look at both of your photos, I see you were both so squared away. Your marines leave reflections for you as does Larry's marines. He loved his recruits as if they were his children. I am thankful you both began your new assignment together.

I was so proud of him for his service to our country and then to his community and I know your family is as equally as proud. I pray for their solace as I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Sgt.Gariepy took us as boots in the Marine Corp. He took us and made us into great leaders. We always PT like no one else did. One time we were doing an exercise dry shooting up the hill. Everyone was doing the high rate of fire peanut butter peanut butter. Well my english was not that good so I started to yell pow once every 2 seconds. He comes with LT Legowski and tells me what I was doing. I told him one shot one kill. He and the Lt laughed out loud. It was great to see him laugh. Well making a long story short he then allowed other Marines to use POW.
I will miss you and Rest in peace...
Ps I also remember one morning waking up in the Big Island of hawaii and planning Climbing Mauna Kea. Well he got us ready and there we go on our day off. It took us all day to climb up that mountain. That was a memory a few will experience..
