Reflections for Reserve Sergeant Joseph Pozell

To say 'Thank You' will never be enough but until someone can think up a better phrase 'Thank You' will just have to serve.

May 17, 2006

To the family of Officer Pozell-
Remembering and honoring his sacrifice one year ago -- may it never be forgotten.

I did not get the opportunity to meet you at the Police Week memorial activities these past few days, but I hope you found some comfort in the overwhelming display of support by the law enforcement community, and in the fact that, sadly, there are many who also walk down a road of grief having lost an officer themselves. You are not alone.

I was in D.C. to honor my brother last year at the time of this terrible tragedy and prayed for you and your family then. Although I was not able to make it this year to hear your name read, you continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, especially on the eve of your first aniversary in Heaven.
Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice. You will always be remembered as a hero.

As I prepare for my trip to DC, I think of you. I think of the day that you gave your life to save others. I'd bet you had no idea how many lives you had an impact on. I wish I had taken a picture of you sitting in the restaurant with my co-workers sharing what would be your final laugh here on earth. I would have kept it right next to the etching of your name that I will surely bring home with me.
Officer Pozell, while your name is read I will say a special prayer for your family and friends. You are fondly remembered and so deeply missed!

Joseph, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Pozell. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

To the family and friends of Reserve Officer Joseph Pozell and his fellow officers in the Metropolitan Police Department:

On behalf of our entire family, we wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Officer Pozell so tragically lost his life. His dedication to his community and his job will be forever remembered.

In reading the reflections about Officer Pozell, it is obvious he was a man of honor and a man devoted to his family. Joseph will never be forgotten by those who cared about him, nor will he be forgotten by those who honor his dedication to his job, even if they didn't know him personally.

May you be comforted by the support and caring of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors. We grieve for you and with you. Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot this past April during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers, so we know the anquish you are experiencing. Please know that the brotherhood and sisterhood of law enforcement will be by your side on each step of the journey ahead of you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of service Officer Pozell gave to his community and the citizens of our nation, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 17, 2005 when he gave his life in the line of duty.

Ofc. Pozell,
Minutes before Sgt. Ashley's end of duty on May 30, 2004, he ran into you on the streets of Georgetown. In terms of a man's respect for another, I think that there are few that Sgt. Ashely respected more. He admired your hard-work and your commitment to your community. As I recall, he called you a "good man."

My heart goes out to his family and friends. Though I did not know Ofc. Pozell personally, I know he was well regarded as a reserve officer to the MPDC.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Joseph did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Joseph be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Pozell's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through these tough times, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (Dennis' department will also always know how to reach me.)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Joseph but, I am certain Joseph was well respected and well loved. He will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were lucky to have had him be a part of your lives. I am know that Joseph will continue to watch over us all as only he can.

Thank you Officer Pozell for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne
