The citizens of St. Paul truly lost a great man and police officer in Sergeant Gerald Vick. He was twice awarded the Medal of Valor, once for bravely saving the life of a one year old baby from a house fire that took the lives of her father and brother and the second for confronting an armed robbery suspect who pulled a gun out on him causing Officer Vick to have to shoot and take the suspects life. Sergeant Gerald Vick was the kind of police officer any community would be grateful to have and he truly embodied everything a great police officer should be. May god bless his family and loved ones as they are in our prayers and may the ultimate sacrifice Sergeant Gerald Vick made never be forgotten.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Sergeant Vick.

While no one who wears a badge wants to be put into such a situation, he put himself into the line of fire to protect those whom he may not have even known despite the danger. While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, May 6, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Sergeant Gerald Vick who died in the line of duty earlier today.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Sgt. Vick’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Jerry,

I woke up this morning to breaking news of your horrific passing. I have listened to stories about you all day, and I can't stand that we have lost such a dedicated officer who has protected our community with so much pride. My heart goes out to your family on this devastating day. Of course we would rather have you here, but I hope that you and my Greg find each other in heaven and be our angels forever more. I will pray for you and your family daily, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking such good care of St. Paul and the state of MN. You will be missed immensely.

God Bless.

The funeral line was long, there's an awful lot of cars. Folks came out of the restaraunts, they came out of the bars. The workers at the construction sites all let their hammers drop, someone asked "What is all of this for?" and they said, "Aw, just a cop."

Someone chuckled at the passing cars, some shed a silent tear, some people said it's stupid all those dumb policemen here. How come they're not out fightin' crime, or in a donut shop? Sure is a lot of trouble for someone who's just a cop.

They blocked the intersections, they blocked the interstate, people yelled and cursed, it's goona' make me late! They're makin' all of us stop! It seems they sure are waistin' time. On someone who's just a cop.

Into the cemetery now the slow procession comes, the woeful taps are slowly played, there's loud salutes from guns. The graveyard workers shake their heads, this service is such a flop. There's lots of good words wasted on someone who's just a cop.

Yea, just a cop to most folks did his duty every day. Tryin' to protect us till they took his life away.

When he got to heaven St. Peter put him at the top. And angel asked "Who was that!?" and he said, "AW JUST A COP!"

Brother Vick you were a great person and will not be forgoten. Your service to a community and a state. We thank you and honor you as you were delievered to watch and protect the streets of heaven. God speed

Somebody killed a Policeman today,
and part of America died.
A piece of the country he swore to protect
will be buried with him at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights;
While a young widowed mother, must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

Yes, someone killed a Policeman today,
maybe in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort, behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks the beat, on a dark city street,
and he stands by each rookie's side.
He answered the call.....of himself he gave all,
and part of America died.
