Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Larry Elwood Lasater, Jr.

On the anniversary of your death, may you always be remembered for your service and sacrifice for country, community, and family. Words can not convey what the heart feels. I never met my grandfather who also gave his life in service and had to leave behind his pregnant wife and a young daughter. You both will be remembered and honored by those who love and respect who and what you were. Rest in Peace and may God watch over you and your loved ones.

This is that day your loved ones remember with pain and tears no matter how many years have gone by. The love you left behind and the memories that bring smiles will forever cast a warm glow in the hearts of your family and friends. The son you never met is approaching young adulthood now and I feel sure you are watching over him; you are his hero and he is yours. Many people will be thinking of you today and praying for continued comfort for your family.

“...In this journey of life, even though we may begin at different times and places, our paths cross with others so that we may share our love, compassion, observations, and hope.....” Your mother Phyllis has my sincere admiration for her devotion to your memory and for her devotion to honoring the lives of so many fallen officers on ODMP. We must always be thankful for people who draw us together in a caring way for a common cause.

I was an alternate juror for this trial. Larry was a great man. The guys that killed him were children and made some really dumbass decisions. They got justice.

This case left an impact on my life. How great he was and how fantastically strong his wife and mother were.

I will remember you forever.

You are remembered Officer Lasater. I've read many of your mother's reflections on the pages of other LEOs on this site. Her words say so much about her character and yours. Your brother in blue.

As I return back from last week's Newman police officer's funeral, law enforcement again prepares for another funeral for a fallen police officer in Davis CA. I am reminded of all the funerals I have attended in my relatively short 16 years in law enforcement. The tragic loss of life for serving and protecting our communities is never one I take lightly and only strengthens my resolve in believing policing is one of the noblest professions in the world. The toll it takes on our families, friends, and departments, is sometimes too much to bear. And yet, if one asks any police officer about joining the police service, most of us wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again.

Mrs. Phyllis Lasater Loya, I had the pleasure of meeting you on a tour of the Arlington National Cemetery during Police Week in 2015. We rode the tour bus for a little while and I am so glad I got the opportunity to meet you and express my condolences on your son's passing as well as my gratitude for you support for all of us in law enforcement. I hope you are doing well.

I saw your mother’s reflection on one of our cities fallen, from 1927. We also recently lost another just last Nov. My sweet friends husband. It never stops. You are surely missed. Your sacrifice has not been forgotten. I pray your son always knows his father through stories and I pray for you Wife, I don’t know her... but I know her.

Thinking about Larry and his family today, 13 1/2 years later. One of the saddest days ever. Such a good man. Such a great cop. Missed. Loved. See you in the morning, hero. Rest well.

This morning is filled with thoughts of you as is every day. Never forgotten. Always honored. Forever missed. Forever loved.

A young 27-year-old deputy from Sacramento County was shot and killed this week. He was only married six months. It can seem so cruel when you think he hadn't even made it to his first anniversary and there was so much ahead of him...or cruel when I think you didn't even get to see your first child because Cody was born 2 1/2 months after you were killed. But now I remind myself of God's timing, not mine and it comforts me. I am trying to live purposefully and intentionally so I can see and live in our unbroken circle with you once again.

Loving you forever and a day.

I hope that everyone can find comfort in Revelation 21:4 where it says, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." Until we see him again in Paradise, please accept my condolences.

Rest In Peace Brother in Blue. Your mother is a great mom.

I pray you Rest in Peace Officer Lasater. John 15:13 " Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends". I thank you my friend, that I never had the honor of meeting. By the kind words your mother, and wife, left on my dad's page Officer Arthur Williams EOW 3-1-78, I know you were a great man, because you were surrounded by a great family. I remember when I lost my dad, I was trying at the age of 19, to be strong for my mother, and my grandmother. Trying to hold that kind of pain in can be very harmful. That's why I still come to this site 40 years later. My mom, nor his mom are no longer with us. So the kind words from another officer's mom, and wife, meant so much to me. I don't just salute you Officer Lasater, I salute your family also. May God bless and keep you.

Rest in peace Officer Lasater. I see your mother writes many reflections as I do regarding brave and honest men and women who serve and place their lives in harm's way for our safety. You'll never be forgotten. My dad may he rest in peace served New York City for nearly forty years back in the late 1920's until August of 1966.

Thank you for your service, and for paying the ultimate price. May you rest in peace. I pray your family finds some peace. I know that's a hard thing for them to do, because my dad was also a police officer killed "Arthur Williams" Newark N.j. March 1, 1978. I was 19 when I got that phone call, as I was serving in the army. I'm 60 yrs. old now, and I still have my moments when it seems like it was just yesterday, and I have to cry. People who don't have love ones in law enforcement can't know this sorrow. I pray your family finds peace where ever they can, and that every officer returns home safely to their family tonight.

Ms Loya. I have read many reflections on here that you have left for countless officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice to their fellow citizens of this nation. You have not forgotten to provide some deep, heartfelt words of encouragement to the surviving members of their families. It led me to your son's page. Please find some comfort in knowing that Larry's sacrifice is always remembered and he always be a part of our family.

Thirteen years ago at this moment you were probably still sleeping because you worked graveyard the night before. In a few hours you went into work early so that another officer could be at the hospital while his wife was giving birth. You didn't hesitate to go in at all (not that you ever did} because you knew in a few months you may need a fellow officer to fill in for you for that same reason. To our great sorrow, you never came home again and that night ended with you at death's door at a hospital crowded with your family and brothers and sisters in blue. My cherished and beloved son, I have struggled so hard to understand why and realize that understanding will probably allude me until Judgment Day. Continue to watch over us. You know our hearts, all our hearts. You are never forgotten...not for a minute. You are always honored, not just for your hero's death but your hero's life. You are always loved...you are the best part of me. Mom

Missing you so much on this Easter Sunday, but so comforted by the Resurrection and knowing He Is Risen. The day that I see you again will be the most joyous day. Loving you always, carrying you in my heart, and trying to carry on your work in my small way by supporting your brothers and sisters in blue.

Dear Ms. Loya, Thank you for the reflection you left on my father's page. I have tears in my eyes as I read the reflections left for Larry. Please know that that we care deeply for your family and honor Larry's service and life. May he rest in peace and may you and all of his loving family find comfort knowing that so many others care.

Mrs. Loya, you left kind words on my dads page and I wanted to thank you for that and for your sons service and sacrifice. Special men and women put on that uniform every day knowing they might not come home. They do a job that’s so often criticized but most don’t have the courage or selfless service to serve their community and country. I hope your days get better and you can heal from this tragedy. Thank you for raising a real hero.

2017 is coming to a close and it has been another tough year for our nation's law enforcement. California lost a young CHP officer on Christmas Eve because someone decided to celebrate with alcohol and marijuana and then drive. Today in Colorado one deputy was fatally shot and 4 other deputies wounded. Praying for peace and safety for all the men and women serving and protecting.

So many Christmas memories of you, and as always I put out the Santa pictures with you and your older brother. I was blessed with being able to see all my grandchildren on Christmas day although Cody was unsuccessful in teaching a new board game he has mastered that I found complicated. You have a very smart son who is like you in so many ways.

Holding you in my heart and you are the best part of me. Loving you for eternity.

Just a few days before Christmas and Mom is cherishing all those special memories of our family when we were all together. How I miss you! I am looking forward to going to a candlelight service tonight at church and will praise God and thank him for each day of your life in this realm. I was so blessed to be your mom.

December can be hard because of your birthday and Christmas, but again this year I celebrated your birthday by doing ride alongs for 12 hours. I rode with two different officers, one of them a new officer, and enjoyed talking about you and listening to them tell me about their lives. It makes me feel close to you on your birthday and made easier what could have been a difficult day much easier Kudos to Patrick and James P.

Loving you forever and a day and holding you in my heart. I know you are looking down with pride at what an amazing young man your son Cody is.

Greetings from silicon valley where i attended the memorial for two Santa Cruz officers on March 8, 2013. Leon Panetta gave a moving speech which is on-line and can easily be found. One version is missing the final 10 seconds which are important. Hope many view it. Or perhaps you were there in person which was even better.
