Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Kurt Andrew Ford

What a tragic story. I'm so sorry for the family, friends and fellow deputies of Deputy Ford. May you find some sense of peace during this difficult time. Deputy Ford's sacrifice will not be forgotten, thanks in part to the keepers of this website.
Just know that there are folks all across this country that care very deeply and will lift you up in prayer. God's blessings on all of you.

Kurt Ford was one of the finest Officers I have worked with in my 28 years of service. Kurt had left Law Enforcement when he moved to Colorado. We attended the same church and he knew that I was a recruiter for the Sheriff's office. He asked me to help him get back into law enforcement. He loved law enforcement. He didn't need me to help him, his work history and his character were far greater than most departments can hope for in an applicant. He soon became an instructor at the Douglas County Sheriff's office, sharing his strengths and talents with others. He was dedicated to God, his family, and the job. He always wore a smile and never had a harsh word to say about anyone.I will never forget the times he would seek up behind me at church and give me a hug. Under the memorable dates listed in the Bible April 9th reads,ISAIAH 6:8 " Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said ," Here am I, send me!" God had a calling for Kurt and he answered it. He held strong to the end and was an example for all of us. God bless you my brother.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but a two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE *** Sent to you by the father of Detective J.D.Koeppen, Raleigh North Carolina; Trooper D.C.Koeppen, New Jersey State Police and Patrolman A.M.Koeppen, Wilmington North Carolina.

I had the great opportunity to work with Kurt for a few months at the Shawnee Police Department. I also had the chance to ride in a car with him and get to know him as a person. What a good person, father and husband he was.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Ford family, and the Harvey County Sheriffs Dept.

DEPUTY FORD ALWAYS HAD A SMILE ON HIS FACE, AND WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP OTHERS. I CAN RECALL SITTING NEXT TO HIM AT CHURCH AND SEEING HIM INTERACT WITH HIS SON'S AND HIS WIFE AND THINKING WHAT A GREAT FATHER AND HUSBAND HE WAS.

I am very shocked and saddened to read this. I worked with Kurt for a short time with the Shawnee KS Police Department where he worked just before going back to Harvey County.

Kurt was a wonderful man and a great police officer. He was very smart, educated and tactical with plenty of experience under his belt. I was able to ride with him about 3 times while he was in training and we had wonderful conversations.

Kurt was very excited to go back to Harvey County where he hoped to be Sheriff in the coming years. After he left we kept in contact via e-mail as he told me of the wonderful time he was having.

Kurt had a great testimony and I am certain that he was saved and is now in Heaven.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ford family as well as all law enforcement.

God bless you Kurt....keep an eye over us down here, brother. Thank you for your dedicated service and your shoulder to lean on.
