I met Kurt and became friends with him about thirteen years ago when our department was forming our tactical team. Kurt has gave countless hours of his time training our team, he loves it. A strong frendship and respect has developed between Kurt and all of our tactical team members and will last forever.
Kurt is not only a gifted instructor he also inspires and motivates all to do their best. Kurt Ford will live on in the hundreds of tactical officers he has trained and shared his knowledge with.
To Jill and their boys, words can't begin to express the sorrow we feel for you and the pain you are suffering for your loss, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
To our friends, brother officers and fellow tactical team members at the Harvey County Sheriff's Department, Newton Police Department and Hesston Police Department our Officers and Team Members will always stand beside you and share in your sorrow, we are missing one of our members. Remember, as we travel through this veil of tears, the entry that Kurt made into that house on S.E. 14th. Street in Newton Saturday morning was not his last building entry, later that morning he entered into that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. I can just see Kurt standing before God, his feet apart, knees slightly bent, his big grin, smiling eyes, rubbing his hands together saying, "Lets Go".
Kurt, you will always be with me.

A true hero was lost on 4-9-2005. Although my time was brief with Kurt, it was obvious to see what kind of a man he was. The world is a better place because of Kurt Ford. Kurt, you will never be forgotten and your family will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,

The Final Inspection
Author Unknown

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face

"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind

I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for here and all the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

April 9th...Another Kansas Officer...another Sheriff's Officer...lost in the line of duty...protecting those who can not protect themselves, and serving their communities with unwaivering courage in the face of danger.

My heart goes out to Deputy Ford's family and to the men & women who served with him throughout the years. To lose an officer of Kurt's caliber is a tragic loss to the Kansas law enforcement community.

His memory will never fade...I know this because 25 years ago on April 9th, 1980 while I was working the 3-11 watch for an Iowa PD, I received the tragic news that a police officer from a neighboring community had been killed...I was stunned to learn that the officer was a friend, John E. Van Haaften (EOW 04/09/1980). That day is burned into my memory and I have thought of John every time I've pinned on my badge for the last 25 years. Kurt's memory will have that legacy too, even for those of us who never met him...

God Speed Deputy Ford...we will stand your watch on earth.

Kurt is one of the kindest most heroic people I have every known. He died a hero. We were all so pleased to have him return to Harvey County. We thought he would be our next sheriff. One thing Kurt will be remembered for are his hugs. He gave me a hug everytime I saw him. That was so special to me. I have learned he gave lots of people hugs. He was such a good, kind, decent person. Honesty and integrity and love of family. All these wonderful atributes went in to making the wonderful man he was. I was devastated to learn he had been killed. All of us who knew and loved him are heartbroken. He as the best.

Rest in peace, Deputy Ford. Domestic violence remains one of the most dangerous and unpredictable calls first responder law enforcement officials face. It is likely many officers can relate to the saying "But there for the grace of God go I".

God bless you, your family, and the Harvey County Sheriff's Office.

Kurt it makes me proud to read what the family knew to be true, you loved your family (all of it) and the boys were your pride and joy. You died doing what all of us knew you loved, law enforcement, even though you tred to leave it you were drawn by that calling. I will forever miss that huge smile that you were so quick to share with everyone and the big hugs that others have mentioned. KURT you were loved by all of us and always will be. Your family and extended family all the men in blue have lost one of the best. Love you and peace to Jill, Preston and Adam, your cousin Becky
