Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sheriff Richard D. Ellis

I am a distant cousin to Sheriff Ellis. I discovered years ago that his name was never added to the police memorial in Washington DC. It took me about five years but I finally got him added. It was one of my greatest accomplishments to honor this great man.

Your assailants may have never been caught but they surely faced a higher justice at a later time. Rest in peace always knowing that your service and sacrifice will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Sheriff R.D. Ellis was my great uncle ,I moved to Ohio after grad.from Huntsville High in 1962 I ran into a little lady up here years ago said she remembered the sheriff .She said he would stop at their house sometimes and spend the night on his way home from preaching a service said she would be sent out to water and take care of his horse ..She said they called him the preaching sheriff ..I have a copy of front page Scott County News Aug. 14 1925 with the head line story in it.The article ends with this statement: Quiet, unassuming, genteel and kind yet fearless and courageous as a lion he went about doing his duty with the zeal of a Christan crusader

Very somber and saddening. A police officer is in constant danger. It is a life of choice to want to serve and protect normal citizens from criminals.

It is so sad to think of that day and the innocence of a man just doing his job and supporting his family.

I, like a previous poster hope that this coward that shot Richard Ellis is burning in hell for his crime. I hope he never enjoyed one moment of peace after his vicious crime.

Still praying for Richards family.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

Sheriff Ellis,
It has taken nearly 80 years, but you are finally being honored for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Scott County.
