Reflections for Police Officer Jackson Vernon Lone

Officer Jackson Vernon Lone was just an awesome guy. He always lit up a room or gathering and usually became the center of attention as everybody enjoyed his company.

I first met Jack when he joined my 6th grade class at St. John’s Elementary school. We hit it off as we were the two non-catholic kids in the class. We played basketball together at St. John’s (Jackson Vernon Lone #55). We continued on in school together at Blanchet High School. Jack joined my family on several trips camping, fishing and to the family property on Whidbey Island. We spent many hours at Green Lake swimming, riding, playing and plenty of mischief.

It was during our junior year in high school that we both decided we would really become police officers. We both found it very exciting and adventurous. It was from that point on that we focused the remaining years of our education towards law enforcement. We graduated together in 1984.

The day after graduation, the two of us took off for Hawaii for 10 great days of fun. Jack said he would be in charge of the social event calendar, and I would be in charge of the business arrangements. We had so much fun on that trip, that we never forgot it. We did many things on that trip, some of which will forever remain a secret. Days were spent sleeping on the beach and evenings were party time. Jack knew how to have a good time!

That fall we entered into the Criminal Justice Program at Shoreline Community College. We spent most of our free time, with the boat he encouraged me to buy, on the very waters he later patrolled in the Harbor Unit. Those were times I will never forget. We both graduated in 1986. In 1987 Jack was hired by SPD and in 1988 I was hired by Bremerton PD. Although we never had a chance to work together, we did however each ride along on patrol with the other. During those ride alongs we reflected on how we achieved what we had dreamed of and were out there doing what we loved. Our careers seemed to parallel from patrol to narcotics, task force and detectives.

Jack loved life and insisted on always having a good time. He encouraged me to live life to the fullest and enjoy every bit of it. I will forever treasure the memories I have of him and the times we spent together. You can bet he is still joking and laughing and “kicking his heels up!”

Rest in peace buddy.

Although I?m sure none of the SPD Explorers ever knew you, I?m positive that we all would of loved to know you. While listening to the reflections of other SPD officers during your service I could tell in everybody?s face that you will be missed by all of us. Listening to how they all talked about your wife Jeannie and son Dawson touched everybody?s harts. We could all tell that you were a GREAT husband, father and Police officer. Our prayers go out to you and your family, and we all know that someday we will all be able to meet you. I?m positive that when the Patrol 4 boat, or any SPD Harbor Unit piece of equipment passes through the waters in Seattle that EVERYONE will think of SEATTLE POLICE OFFICER JACKSON LONE! Your family will be watched over by many people, and someday Dawson will follow in your footsteps as a HERO!

I first met Jack Lone at the Police Academy when he was in the class just ahead of mine. He tried to trick my newer class into doing things that he knew would get Unwanted attention from the academy staff. This brought out some great laughs from Jack when he found out we had to write memo's as punishments.

We were assigned as new officers to East Precinct when we came off of the FTO program. Jack went to Third Watch and I went to Second Watch. One of the practical jokes I saw Jack pull back in that time was Jack getting a pin on "Sweetland" nametag for him and his partner. It was peculiar how Officer Joel Sweetland would get complaints called into his Sergeants when he wasn't even working. Jack later walked a beat on Broadway with Sammy Derezes which made the pair infamous with the criminals in the area and the folks that hung out at "Charlie's Bar". I remember Jack could hardly wait to put on his first five year star on his beat coat. Those were good times.

Jack Lone and I worked together on the East Precinct Anti-Crime team in 1990 and 1991. This was during the middle of the Rock house and gang epidemic that had swept into Seattle from Southern California. Our Act team served one or more search warrants almost every work day. I went through a lot of doors with Jack. He was a great officer to clear a room with or just simply have on a shake at one of the many drug locations. We shared the same sense of humor so we had some wild times during that assignment. Those were good times.

I went to Narcotics and was promoted to Sergeant of the North ACT team in 1992. Jack took my place in the narcotics unit and I got to work with him a great deal in his new role as an "Undercover" Officer. Jack was a natural Actor who had some wild undercover looks. He was very convincing when it came to working in these roles. During this time Narcotics Detective Antonio Terry was shot and killed. Jack and I both had worked a great deal with Antonio. Jack was greatly affected by his death. I know they are sharing some good times now.

I will never forget the Officers who I've worked with and Jack was one of the best. He stood by my family when I had a daughter pass away in 1989. I will never forget that. I will look forward to the day when I can pay him back. When his son Dawson gets older I will tell him about the fun times I had working with his dad and how great a friend, man and hero he was to all of us. That will be a good time.

Oh how I will miss my Buddy "Action Jackson"! Rest in peace brother.....

It seems to me, in reading all of these upbeat memorials, that this man was loved my many, and was the shining light in his friends and family's lives. While he is gone now, his spirit lives on in heaven. Keep him in your thoughts, as they will still carry you thru the hard times. He is in good company up there!

Office Lone, sir, you are 10-7, good night, and Godspeed.

To the Family, Friends, and Co-Workers in your grief and sorrow words can not change the reality, words can only provide a link between we whose hurt is less direct, and you whose hurt is personal and horrendous. Words can help assure you that others care, that tyou are loved, and that you are not alone. God speed Officer Lone.

Jeannie and Dawson, Betty and Jack's sisters: I had the pleasure and honor of supervising Jackson "Batman" in the Anti-Crime Team of the SPD East Pct. He had attended high school with my oldest daughter, Karen at Blanchett. I had a Jackson history lesson from her when I told her that Jack Lone was in my squad. The "Batman" story emerged...who else could ride to school dressed as "Batman" with a "Robin" on the back of the motorcycle. I had concerns, of course, that things might be unusual in the A.C.T. 'Team'. They were. I never had so much fun in my career as a Sergeant. Jackson was thoughtful, humerous, very competant, professional, considerate and frankly, my favorite. I have most wonderful memories sailing with him as well. I spoke with Jack recently about another afternoon on the water. Perhaps I can teach Dawson when he is older. I can't wait for another Jackson in my life. With Love, Joe

Jackson, I love you for the joy, happiness, and humour you gave to Jeannie, Dawson, your mother and sister, all the officers you worked with, and anyone whose lives you touched. The few times I was with you I always felt welcome. You provided me with pee my pants, gut splitting, smile on my face laughter every time! You are not lost to us as long as we all remember, in our minds and hearts, the amazing man that you were and keep you alive through the stories we tell and the memories we have. You will forever be with us.

Officer Lone sounds like a rare man who was not only a police officer, but a friend to the highest regard. I know that his physical presence will be sorely missed for a long time to come, but he will never be forgotten... Hes looking down on his brothers and sisters in blue now, and they should all feel safer for that reason. His family, friends, and fellow officers are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of great sorrow. Were not too many miles North... and it hit home hard here too. God Bless.

Once again, we mourn the tragic loss of a brother officer. Your heartache and emptiness are felt and shared by all who work in law enforcement. My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Lone's family, friends, and with the Seattle Police Department. Jack Lone joins many who have gone before him, and he now watches over us from above. Officer Loan, rest easy, my brother. We have the watch.

Jack,
You were my partner my friend and my brother. We first met in college and later I grew to love you at SPD. While either seated next to you in a patrol car or a cluck bucket in Narcotics you kept me laughing until I was crying every night of every shift. Eventhough your whole life was surrounded by laughter and happiness it wasn't until you met Jeannie and you two had Dawson that I saw you as happy and content as you deserve. I am eternally greatful to the powers to be that even for that short time you were able to experience tht pride and happiness of fatherhood and marriage. Today, I'm in need of your humor and laughter to get me though what has been one hell of a dreary week...Jack, I will not say goodbye tonight as we tip a glass to you, I will just say Thank You for being Jack.
Love Ya,
Toad
