To the family:

I lost my older brother, officer Bryan Hurst during a bank robbery on Jan. 6, 2005. I'm so sorry to read of your loss. You're probably all still in shock, but I hope you lean on the people that love you and know that for many of us that don't know you, and can not be there, our hearts go out to you.

Craig was one of the very few of us who are fortunate enough to truly love our work. He took great pride in serving his community.

He will be forever missed by all of his family and friends. We will never forget you Craig.

A huge thanks goes out to the Lawrence Police Department for their ongoing support to Craig's wife and children, during this unfortunate time. I am amazed at the bond these officers share and their level of committment to this fallen officers family.

Craig was a great husband who loved his wife dearly and a tremendous father to his two sons.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends. All of which will never completely recover from this tragic loss.

Please say a prayer for Craig and all who were close to him.

I love you Craig and I find peace in knowing that you and I will one day again be joyfully reunited.

Your Brother,
Jay

My deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers of Officer Herbert. I know exactly what you are feeling now, and there is nothing I can say to make it any easier. Just know that there are too many who know that pain, and our love, support and prayers are surrounding you at this time.
I can promise you this, though. Somewhere, somehow, you will find the strength to wake up each morning and carry on. Officer Herbert is a hero, and his spirit will be there to hold you up as I know our Kevin is.
God Bless you

To the family of Officer Herbert, Our heart cries for you, we can feel your pain and loss. As we have heard time and time again , "some things just aren't right."

We lost our only son May 15,2004, in a high speed pursuit. Shane was sworn in on Friday morning, reported for duty Friday evening at 7:00 o'clock and was killed Saturday morning at 1:00 0'clock, only working 6 hours as a police officer for Tabor City Police Dept. The pursuit was for a traffic violation. IF ONLY, there are so many questions.

We wish we could tell you that time will heal, but that would not be true. We can only tell you to put your trust in the Good Lord above and pray day and night for him to give you strength for the long and lonely road ahead. Keep your family and friends very close to you, for they can help you and lend you support and love.

May God in his mercy and love be with you until you can see you loved one again.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Craig did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Craig be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Herbert's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Craig is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Craig was well respected and well loved. You were blessed to have had him in your life, even for a short time.

Thank you Officer Herbert for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Having lost Deputy Michael Arruda this past year (EOW 06-15-04), we know all too well the pain and reality of losing one of our own.
