Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Eric Jay Van Fossan

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

I went to my first academy with Eric. I have known him since I was 11. We became certified officers in 1992.He loved being a police officer. He had a strong sense of right and wrong. He wanted to make the world a better place and dedicated his whole heart and soul to make it happen. God bless Eric and prayers to his family left behind. Texas has lost a fine officer.

Rest in peace, brother. Your job here is done and you have earned your place alongside all of the other warriors of justice who have served with honor, integrity and pride.

Watch over your family and keep them safe. Help them to find the strength we know they will need to forge ahead in your absence. Let them find comfort in knowing that they helped to make you the man you are. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Keep watch over your brothers and sisters in blue as we continue to carry the sword and fight the battle in this world, until the time that we are called to our final assignment to join you.

What is that wonderful sound
It’s coming from the cemetery ground
Sounds like bagpipes from a military tattoo
A large number of people gathered wearing blue

It’s a police funeral conducted in a military fashion
Marching in line with pride and passion
They are saying goodbye to their fallen comrade
All performed with the precision of a military parade

An observer cannot feel anything but proud
To have touched the life of the person in the funeral shroud
To give your life in such a way
Heroic to the end, the supreme price to pay

The dedication of the boys in blue
To sacrifice their lives for you
They are eternally in your debt
The sacrifice, you do not regret

R.I.P Officer Van Fossan, thanks for all the great work that u did u will be dearly missed, thanks for putting your life on the line every single day that u put the uniform on. my deepest sympathies go out to your family, friends, and fellow co-workers. even though your gone your still here in spirts>

Ofc. Jay Van Fossan,

I hope to come to this page and never find a new name added to the list. Then the reality is this job takes Heros who are willing to sacrafice themselves for others. Yet another hero has paid the price that so few are willing to pay. I Honor You, Blue Angel, and Your sacrafice, We all do. Thank You Brother for continuing the long line of Heros that truly make this world a better place. "Poi si 'torno 'all eterna fontana."
