Reflections for Police Officer Bryan Scott Hurst

Bryan-
Today is the anniversary of when you saved so many lives. We all met at the bank today to remember you. All of us that were affected by the sadness that happened three years ago today have become somewhat like a disconnected family. It was great to see your family and to spend some time with them. They are remarkable. It is so evident why you were who you were! I just wanted to tell you again how much all of us are indebted to you for your sacrifice. we will never forget what you did for us. I hope that you are resting quietly and that you can feel the love all of us send you. You are my number one hero. Thanks with all of my heart!

HURST,

We're thinking of you today and everyday. Gone but never ever forgotten. You are the true definition of a HERO. Your Mom and Dad's memorial in the Toledo Blade is a fitting tribute of the courage you displayed that horrible day.

GO BUCKS.

Bryan,
I'm honored to join the ranks of an agency that procuces such fine, couragous officers such as yourself. I truly hope that as I start my career, I can someday become half of the officer you were.
You're gone, but will never be forgotten.

When a police officer is killed, it is not a city that loses an officer - it is an entire nation.
You are a true hero and will not be forgotten on this 3 year anniversary.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As another New Year's Eve approaches, I think back to Abbey and I driving to Columbus to watch Malia on her first New Year's Eve so you and Marissa could celebrate and catch up on some sleep. Never would I have imagined one week later you would be gone. I continue to honor your memory and keep you close to my heart. Keep watch over all of us, especially your family and brothers in blue. My old neighbors were here to visit and reminded me how much fun you had playing with Malia's toys on her first Christmas here in Canton. Your spirit and sacrifice are cherished by so many, Bryan.

With love,

Went to the OC the other day with some fellow CPD officers; I haven't been there since your passing. Saw the tribute they have to you on the wall and we talked about the last time we saw you. Merry Christmas Bryan. You are always walking with us. Thank you.

Gumper,

It was almost one for the ages. WVU vs. OSU would have been outstanding. Guess it wasn't meant to be. The Buckeyes should climb to #1 in the polls. Miss you everyday. We should bring the title home this year. Steelers are looking good too. Wish you were here so we could enjoy it together.

Bryan,

I hope you like the ornament this year. It has been along time since I have visted your grave. I guess going makes it real that your gone.
Malia is so beautiful, very smart and funny. If I say something to her she doesn't like, she is very quick with a come back that just cracks me up. She never misses a thing.
I think of you every day, even if it is just for a second. I keep your picture in my night stand so that I won't forget to think about you and your family. Your blue ribbon I keep in my kitchen.
I was wearing a t-shirt with a NYPD patch on it, and a man stopped me to tell me how awful policeman were and they shoot to kill. My comeback was, "I guess if you lived by the law, you wouldn't have to worry about it". It made me angry, but I had to stop and tell him about you. I think I took him by surprise, because he told me he was sorry for speaking that way.
God Bless you Bryan!

Officer Hurst, I came across your story of heroism as I was checking on my friend who recently made the ultimate sacrifice in Toledo. I want you to know that you are being thought of throughout this country. Your actions were heroic, your presence and will to fight, at that bank undoubtably saved lives. You lived up to your sworn oath and you are an inspiration to us all.

As a born and raised "Ohioian" I am a true OSU fan as are you. I have to let you know the Illinois loss hurt but we let the Wolverines know who's boss! On our way to Pasadena!

To your family, your husband, father, son, and friend will be with you always and he will continue to look out for you from above. Officer Hurst will you tell my friend Officer Keith Dressel that we are thinking about him down here and you can tease him about the OSU victory over Michigan.

May God watch over your family and the members of the Columbus Police Department.

Please keep me safe liek you did January 6. In the past week we have had two major bank robberies within a mile from my bank. Days like this I want to quit and give up. But, then I think of how you did not give up. He should not have to destroy my career. He has changed so many lifes and I should not give him the victory of changing my life. Please help me get through this and not be afraid. Always and forever my number one hero.

Bryan,
I know you are laughing in heaven when you hear Malia say "Go Bucks; Michigan sucks." She also gives a great cheer with OH - IO. She proudly recites the Pledge to our flag without missing a word. Please know that I continue to honor your memory and the tremendous sacrifice you made. Continue to watch over all of us.

Love,
Sherri
