Reflections for Police Officer Bryan Scott Hurst

To the entire Hurst family, I am truly sorry for your tragic loss. I keep praying that line of duty deaths will end but unfortunately they haven't. I know your pain first hand.
To Officer Hurst's daughter, it saddens me that you will never get to truly know your father, but know that he was a hero. To his wife, cherish your memories and know that he is still here in your daughter. This seperation will be hard but will not be everlasting. I will keep you in my prayers.

A POLICE OFFICER’S WIFE

A special kind of woman.
A cut above the rest
Always rating her
among the very best.
How many goodbyes are shouted
without a fond embrace.
As duty steals her man away
for the dangers he must face.
How many meals are ruined
or tender moments disturbed.
All for the call of loyalty
to which her man must serve.
She can push the mower,
or paint a room in need.
How she can stretch a dollar
is a miracle indeed.
She's a mother, a lover,
a chauffeur and a nurse.
A living symbol of the phrase
for better or for worse.
Rich is the man indeed...
That become this Woman's life.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Bryan did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Bryan be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Hurst's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Bryan is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Bryan was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Officer Hurst for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

God bless you for your fearless acts that tragic day. You offered the ultimate sacrifice to save so many. Gone, but never forgotten...we will always remember.

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

Well done Devil Dog, not many men have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to the face of evil and perform in combat. You make me proud to be a police officer and more proud to be a former jarhead like yourself. Semper Fi brother, your spirit will live forever among us. God bless your family who had their loving father, husband, and child, stolen from them by the wicked cowards we will always pursue. Semper Fidelis Bryan.

On behalf of the London Police Dept. we want to give our condolences to the Hurst Family. He served his Country as a Marine and a Police Officer. When one of us goes down, it effects us all. The call to become a Police Officer, is the call to serve something greater than ourselves. Bryan answered that call, both as a Marine and a Police Officer. Semper Fi Bro.
