Virgil Green, you may not remember me by name but I was the person that communicated with you about W.R. Shaver, my wife's great grandfather and provided you with what I had researched. I believe Prof, Art Burton an expert historian on Black Lawmen who had written
about W.R. Shaver you communicated with also.

My contact and giving what Art Burton had wrote on W.R., I never thought that contact with you was going to be so significant in the Shaver family. You could have took in what I shared and that was the end. But it was not.

You worked to get Highway 62 name changed I was aware of but did not know all the effort you took for the change to happen. It did not end their

My reasearch, you taking me serious, talking to Prof. Burton, and you working on getting the highway renamed means a lot. W.R. was not even on the Fallen Officers Memorial wall in DC. He is now on that wall. He was added during the same ceremony year his great great grandson was also killed in the line of duty was added.

Your name and your efforts are forever connected with the family and will be passed downed for all the generation to come.

Much love and respect for you.

My name is Virgil Green, I'm the former police chief of Boley, Oklahoma (2000-2011) who in 2005 wanted to honor W.R. "Dick" Shaver and his extended family. I went to then Oklahoma State Representative Ryan Kesiel, to see how the State of Oklahoma could honor Marshal shaver. I presented the idea of naming a portion of State highway 62 that runs through Boley. Naming it the W.R. "Dick" Shaver Memorial highway. The Oklahoma House of Representative and the Oklahoma Senate passed a bill allowing the naming of W.R. "Dick" Shaver Memorial Highway. After 100 years this made history because W.R. " Dick" Shaver became the first African American Lawman to receive this honor in the State of Oklahoma. Every time you travel State Highway 62 in Boley, Oklahoma you will forever see the name W.R. "Dick" Shaver. I'm extremely honored to have been a part of this historical moment in Back history in Oklahoma and for the Shaver family.

RIP. Thank you for service. I know this not common in a reflection but as the current Chief of Police for the Boley Police Department I am wanting to start a annual award in the name of Marshall, W.R. Shaver. This will be a great way to never forget the sacrifice made. If some knowing the gaming could reach out to the Boley Police Department it would be greatly appreciated.

Who would've thought that nearly 100 years later another family member would heroically and selflessly give of himself in the line of duty like you did in the name of public safety. God Bless you, your great-great grandson Officer Gray and your entire family, and rest in peace always knowing that your service and sacrifice will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren.

W.R. Shaver was my wife's great grandfather. After I did rearch on him and presented my findings to the Boley police chief and legislators, highway 62 was remamed to the W.R. Shaver Highway. We also had his name placed on the fallen officers memorial wall in DC. The link goes to the photo taken during the highway name change. My name Mary Ella Jackson and Uncle Dick was my great great uncle. My grandfather was John Shaver of Eufaula, Ok and Uncle Dick was his uncle, my mom Johnnie Mae Shaver-Jackson was Uncle Dick’s great niece. It is an honor to be related to such a legacy. I get emotional and smile every time I read about him. I too have heard stories about Uncle Dick from my grandfather “Big Papa” John Shaver as well as from his son Little John. It always made/makes me feel proud to be connected to this extraordinary man that I never knew but yet feel so connected to. I’m so glad that he finally got his props for his contribution to service and history. RIP Uncle Dick. With Love❤️

It's good see all the memories and ackwlodgements about the First Black U.S. Marshall. As one of his granddaughters, I appreciate hearing the perspectives of other family and friends about a selfless person who gave his life while fulfilling his commitment to service. This example should be shared and remembered for our present and future children to emulate.

While in Washington DC for National Police week and C.O.P.S. convention where we were there as our nephew, Officer Stephon Gray was being honored we discovered that W.R. Shaver, his great great grandfather, was also being honored. It was a very spiritual and special that both relatives were honored at the same time even though their deaths were 100 years apart. Both were special men.
