Reflections for City Marshal W. R. Shaver
Who would've thought that nearly 100 years later another family member would heroically and selflessly give of himself in the line of duty like you did in the name of public safety. God Bless you, your great-great grandson Officer Gray and your entire family, and rest in peace always knowing that your service and sacrifice will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren.

W.R. Shaver was my wife's great grandfather. After I did rearch on him and presented my findings to the Boley police chief and legislators, highway 62 was remamed to the W.R. Shaver Highway. We also had his name placed on the fallen officers memorial wall in DC. The link goes to the photo taken during the highway name change. I am the big guy in the suite rear left. https://images.app.goo.gl/bAFFbXyXGRPNh1n1A

My name Mary Ella Jackson and Uncle Dick was my great great uncle. My grandfather was John Shaver of Eufaula, Ok and Uncle Dick was his uncle, my mom Johnnie Mae Shaver-Jackson was Uncle Dick’s great niece. It is an honor to be related to such a legacy. I get emotional and smile every time I read about him. I too have heard stories about Uncle Dick from my grandfather “Big Papa” John Shaver as well as from his son Little John. It always made/makes me feel proud to be connected to this extraordinary man that I never knew but yet feel so connected to. I’m so glad that he finally got his props for his contribution to service and history. RIP Uncle Dick. With Love❤️

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 108th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

It's good see all the memories and ackwlodgements about the First Black U.S. Marshall. As one of his granddaughters, I appreciate hearing the perspectives of other family and friends about a selfless person who gave his life while fulfilling his commitment to service. This example should be shared and remembered for our present and future children to emulate.

I am pretty sure this was probably a great great great uncle. My dad was Will Shaver and was the son of John and Ella-Mae Shaver of Eufaula. My mother remembers stories told by "Big Poppa" about Dick Shaver.

While in Washington DC for National Police week and C.O.P.S. convention where we were there as our nephew, Officer Stephon Gray was being honored we discovered that W.R. Shaver, his great great grandfather, was also being honored. It was a very spiritual and special that both relatives were honored at the same time even though their deaths were 100 years apart. Both were special men.
