RIP Sgt Lane.Ive ridden motorcycles all my life. One can only imagine how it felt up there on cloudless day. You ask people why they fly a plane or ride a motorcycle or ride a horse. The only word comes to my mind is “freedom”.

Hello Officer Lang. Your mother contacted me recently to talk to me about my brother's death and tell me about the survivor's group in Houston. She told me about you.

I respect and admire you and the service you provided to us every day. Your experience was a valuable resource that I know is missed. Your loss was a serious loss to the nation.

I am looking forward to meeting your mother the next time I am in Houston.

Please rest in peace and let my brother know how much I miss him.

Your brothers/sisters of the Tampa Police Department are thnking of you on this day. I had the honor and privledge of metting your sister, Carolane.

She is an amazing woman who never misses the oppurtunity to tell others about her brother. She is very proud and uses your spirit to help others. Her work with C.O.P.S. is, and has, made a difference in many who have faced similar tragedies. She is a true warrior.

Sergeant Lane, thank you for your service and watch out for us from above. May God Bless you and your family.

It is Christmas time again. I know that everyday is hard for Renee and Ben but the Holidays must be worse. There is a hole in the South Park Baptist Christmas Contada without him. When I think of Mike and Renee, I have such find memories. God obviously had a purpose for taking him. However, he is missed and loved.

To the family and friends of Sergeant Mike Lane and his fellow officers in the Beaumont Police Department:

On behalf of our entire family, we wish to pay honor to Mike's memory on the fourth anniversary of the day Mike so tragically lost his life. His heroism, valor and bravery will be forever remembered.

May you be continue to be comforted by the support and caring of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors. We grieve foor you and with you. Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot in April of 2005 during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers, so we know the anquish you are still experiencing.

Please know that the brotherhood and sisterhood of law enforcement will always be by your side on each step of the journey.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the e years of service Sgt. Lane gave to his community and the citizens of Texas, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 16, 2004.

I worked with Mike Lane at a medical faculity where he worked security on his off jobs. Mike always spoke of his wife and his son and of his love for them. He was a kind man and we always laughed as he helped me do my work. I still think of him from time to time and I know that I am a better person for knowing him. My thoughts are with his family and his parents. He was a good person.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

My heart is with your family this Christmas. I know that they have plenty of support from the department and the church but nothing replaces your husband. Thanks for all the good memories we shared as a childhood and my teenage years. You and Renee really had an effect on me whether you knew it or not. May the Lord grant Renee and Ben peace this Christmas.

I wanted to stop in and leave a reflection on a day that your family and friends will never forget for as long as they walk this earth. There are no words I can say to comfort or repair their broken hearts. Maybe there is some solace in that you died while doing something you loved, being a police officer. Watch over them and protect them.

Sergeant Lane,
Although we have never meet, you are being remembered today as the hero that you are. As you now patrol the streets of heaven, I know that you are looking down and embracing your loving family, friends and brothers / sisters in blue.
To your family: I pray that you are touched by a moment where you will be able to have a memory of your beloved James that may bring just a moment of sunshine into this dark day.
Lay your heavy heart and head into the hands of Christ and let him carry you through this valley so you may soon see the top of the mountain.

Mike,

When we started raising funds for the department memorial, Mark said you were one of the first to give. I would never have thought your name would be on the star. I met your family at the dedication and am honored to have had a part in creating a memorial to you and the rest of the guys. I will always miss you smile and great sense of humor.
