Reflections for Detective Patrick H. Rafferty

STILL CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT'S HAPPENED EVEN NOW, ALL I CAN SEE AND REMEMBER ARE THE GOOD TIMES IN THE 67 SQD OR IN THE WEIGHT ROOM, STILL HARD TO BELIEVE WHAT'S HAPPENED.

Hey Paddy Boy...Nine years now...nine years...its still so hard to believe your not here. The kids are all growing so fast. Eileen posts pictures all the time and I'm just amazed how big they are now. I've got Stephanie & James shooting rifle, shotgun and pistols now so hunting with them is probably right around the corner. Still not smoking...7 years now..thats a record for me. Fall is in the air..ducks & geese flying all over...cold mornings..just they way we love it. Oh and our Man in Black, Johnny Cash is now on a stamp. Love and miss ya Paddy, thanks for watching over us and keep the signs coming.

Safe In the Harbour from Eric Bogle

Here is the lyrics for Safe In the Harbour
We hope that you enjoy them just asmuch as we here at International Lyrics DataBase do.

Have you stood by the ocean on a diamond-hard morning
And felt the horizon stir deep in your soul?
Watched the wake of a steamer as it cut thru blue water
And been gripped by a fever you just can't control?
O to throw off the shackles and fly with the seagulls
To where green waves tumble before a driving sea wind
Or to lie on the decking on a warm summer evening
Watch the red sun fall burning beneath the earth's rim

Chorus:

But to every sailor comes time to drop anchor
Haul in the sails and make the lines fast
You deep water dreamer, your journey is over
You're safe in the harbor at last (2x)

Some men are sailors, but most are just dreamers
Held fast by the anchors they forge in their minds
Who in their hearts know they'll never sail over deep water
To search for a treasure they're afraid they won't find
So in sheltered harbours they cling to their anchors
Bank dow their boilers & shut down their steam
And wait for the sailors to return with the bright treasures
That will fan the dull embers & fire up their dreams

Chorus

And some men are schemers who laugh at the dreamers
Take the gold from the sailors & turn it to dross
They're men in a prison, they're men without vision
Whose only horizon is profit and loss
So when storm clouds come sailing across your blue ocean
Hold fast to your dreaming for all that you're worth
For as long as there's dreamers, there will always be sailors
Bringing back their bright treasures from the corners of earth

Hey Paddy, Eight long years you've been gone, taken from us at such a young age. This year has been much like the last seven without you around...Still hoping to get to hunting and still not smoking!! I often think of those times on our way up to hunting in Maine...both having quit "the smokes" only to have one ask the other and then we'd stop and buy some, then hit the NH Liquor store and then LL Bean in Freeport. So many memories from our childhood into adulthood. Thanks Paddy for always being there for me. I love and miss you very much buddy. Thanks for all the signs and keep them coming.

Hey Paddy, Here we are, seven years later and missing you more than ever. Still wanting to get back to hunting, almost got out last fall but it didn't pan out. Hoping when I do that you will help me out, like you did in our last snowshore hare hunt! Still smoke free and no desire at all. Thanks for all the signs, not a day goes by without you in my thoughts. Love & miss ya Paddy.

Hey Uncle Pat,

Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I wear your shield around my neck next to my dad's everyday. I can't believe how much time has gone by yet it still feels like it all happened yesterday, that was the first week of 9th grade and now I'm almost done with my junior year of college. I really miss you Uncle Pat, we all do, my sisters and brother have all gotten so big now, you'd love them. I still have yet to go hunting but every time I see ducks out or I row past the blind that's in Oyster Bay I think of you. Hope you're having fun up there, I'll be 21 in two weeks, and I'm going to have to go find all the bars you used to go to back in West Islip and wreak some havoc like you would have. Wish you were here with us.

Love,
Sean

Paddy,
Another year has past, six now since you were taken. I hope that you can see just how much you are missed here and how many peoples lives were so much better with you in it. I miss you buddy and it doesn't get any easier as time goes by. Thanks for continuously sending me signs. Four years now without a smoke! The weather is just starting to change, fall is in the air and hunting season around the corner. Maybe I'll get out this season but its hard to think about without you. Love and miss ya Paddy.

Paddy,
I can't believe five years have passed already. I can't explain how much I miss the friendship we had and knowing that I always had someone to talk to, no matter what the problem or subject. I am forever replaying our last conversation in my head and wishing we had gotten the chance to take that one last hunting trip. I know you are always sending me signs, they are undeniable. You are in my thoughts everyday. Although this is the eve of your fifth anniversary, the pain is the same as if it happened yesterday. Miss you,Paddy. Love,Rob

To the family and loved ones of Detective Patrick Rafferty, his fellow officers with the New York City Police Department, and most especially to Patrick:

On this the fourth anniversay of your tragic death, please know that you are honored and revered today and everyday.

From all the loving reflections left about you, I can see that you were an amazing man and what a grievous loss your loved ones have endured because of your brutal murder.

May your spirit continue to soar and your memory continue to inspire. You are loved and missed by so many as is the other heroic detective who shared your same fate that awful night four years ago.

Rest in Peace, Patrick. A body is but for a lifetime, but spirits and souls are for eternity and yours is forever part of those who call you beloved.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Patrick gave to his community and the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 10, 2004.

Paddy,
It is the eve of your fourth anniversary in heaven and I'm missing you as much as I did they day you were taken from us. I think of you so many times, everyday. I am thinking of hunting again. I haven't hunted since I went with Dennis,Frank,Bo and Billy to Maine for the snowshoes. Since Josie and I moved the kids to NH I keep thinking how much you would have liked it up here.Stephanie's showing a lot of interest in hunting and is shooting a bow amazingly well, she's already won 3 tournaments @ 7 years old. I miss our talks, our hunts and the harrassment we would give the other on a missed shot. Love ya Paddyand thinking of you always.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Just finished watching "How Green Was My Valley", Paddy.
The part of Hue Morgan , played by Roddy McDowell reminded me of how you looked as a kid. Those are great memories I have and I share with my kids. Thanks for being a friend.

Patty, We went through the Police Academy together in Company 89-19 back in 1989. I sat in front of you throughout the training. I would occasionally break your shoes, and you would laugh. I remember about you is how mature you were for your age. You truly were a professional even back then. I cherish the photograph we took together on gun and shield day. Rest in peace brother, till we meet again.
