Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Robert L. Parker

Bobby we went to Boy's and Girls High School together and both singed in Mr. Edmonds Mixed Choir. What a journey and friendship we both shared. We had our up's and down's but we remain friends until the end. It's hard to believe that you are gone. I thought you would live for a long time but God looked down and called you home. I know you're with your Mom,Uncle and Nanna but I still missed you calling and saying Bob Parker...We had so much fun at the Freddy Fixer and don't forget Junior's...I'll never forget how proud you were of me when I was promoted to Sergeant." Don't forget our favorite dancing song..... 'Just Got Pay Friday Night.... Rest in Peace Gentle Giant........Rest On.....

To the family and loved ones of Detective Robert Parker, his fellow officers with the New York City Police Department, and most especially to Robert:

On this the fourth anniversay of your tragic death, please know that you are honored and revered today and everyday.

From all the loving reflections left about you, I can see that you were an amazing man and what a grievous loss your loved ones have endured because of your brutal murder.

May your spirit continue to soar and your memory continue to inspire. You are loved and missed by so many as is the other heroic detective who shared your same fate that awful night four years ago.

Rest in Peace, Robert. A body is but for a lifetime, but spirits and souls are for eternity and yours is forever part of those who call you beloved.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Robert gave to his community and the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 10, 2004.

I met Bobby in 1979 when we were both Auxiliary Police Officers in the 79 Precinct. We developed a close friendship and became a part of each others family. Bobby had many friends yet he had a way of making each person feel particularly special and important in his life. You are truly a HERO and I am grateful to have traveled 25 years with you on your life's journey. Rest in peace my friend.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Bobby,

You are sorely missed. No words can express the void that you left behind, empty shoes no one can fill...EVER! I miss the Big Man I came to meet and know as a beautiful person. I convince myself as each day goes by that God needed an Angel with big shoes to fill in heaven, so he called your name. Rest Bobby, until we meet again. Love Val,

Robert,it's been almost two years since you left this world for a better place to continue your calling along with your partner and all those that preceded you. Each time I think of you, it hurts to know that you was called home so early in life. God has a plan for each of us and only he knows when he will be calling on us.
To your family; The Lord is with you he will comfort you as you call upon him, I know with all my heart that you will see Robert again and it will be a joyous moment. I remember his smile and friendliness when he came into the Chief's office at the Boro. I can honestly say he was a gentleman loved by all. He will forever be in my mind and I will remember him with a smile. May God bless you all and watch over you day and night, this is my prayer for you.

I just left the same message for your partner. I don't even know what to say- when is this going to come to an end. My thoughts are with all of your loved ones on the day you were taken from them almost one year ago. This is very similar to the way I lost one of my close friends at the beginning of 2004. You were doing your job when a complete idiot took you away from your family and friends. I can only hope that justice will be served. Take care and tell Nick hi.

Wow, What cool brother. Me and Bobby did NSU together and worked in Bklyn North Task Force. When I heard the news I was num. He would also say my name is Bond James Bond. He was also a big Star Trek fan. I remember on his cell phone the message was "If you like to leave a message make it so" I still use that on my cell phone today.
Rest in Peace Bobby!

Bobby,
I went to Mooneys on New Years Eve to see you and everyone else,. I'm sorry we never stayed in touch when I moved to MD. I miss you my Brother. I haven't cried in sorrow for years. Funny how you always had that power of bringing the humanity out in everyone. They told me then what happened. I can't imagine you not being here.

I Love you Kid

As the Director of Research for the Officer Down Memorial Page I have had the sad duty to add the names of many fallen officers to this site. Unfortunately, on November 10, 2004 I had to add two more names to our list of fallen heroes. What made that even worse was that I personally knew both of the officers.

When I got to the 67 in 1999 I met Bobby Parker. Bobby was a big guy and hard to miss. As big as Bobby was, so was his heart. Even though he has about 17 years on the job at that point and he was assigned to the Detective Squad in the Precinct, he still treated all the new guys like men. He would take time to talk to us and answer any question we had. Bobby was a cops cop. I'll miss seeing him around the station house and down in the gym.

Rest in Peace.

My heart goes out to the families of Detectives Parker and Rafferty. Having grown up in Brooklyn not far from where they were working and having been appointed to NYPD in 74, I can only grieve for their families. Life is so short for those who do good. If I could, I would have glady traded
places with them that fateful day. God bless all who wear the badge.

Patrick Rafferty was my long time friend and my brother-in-law for fifteen years. His devotion to his family and wife was awe inspiring. His devotion to his fellow man was nothing short of unbelievable. A day doesn't go by that I don't mourn his lose and grieve for the children and Eileen. God bless this loving family. May God hold close Eileen, Kara, Kevin and Emma as they attempt to go on without the anchor of their household and neighborhood. Patrick positively affected all those he came in contact with, myself included and for it I will be eternally grateful for his friendship and compassion.

No one loved being a N.Y.P.D. Detective more than Det. Bobby Parker. Eventhough he was the senior Detective on the team he was always willing to roll up his sleaves and get "DIRTY". He taught me a lot about Detective work, as he taught many others before me, and for that I am forever greatful. Thank you Mr. Parker. Rest in peace.
