Reflections for Correctional Officer Scott Edward Bryant

Hi hon-
Hard to believe that another year has come and gone already. We still miss you so much. Alot has changed this year, as I am sure that you know. Brooke is getting ready to graduate, time has flown by. Bailie is driving, thank goodness she has a great guardian angel on her shoulder!
We are headed back to Ames tomorrow in your honor and will present your award and will also present something back to them this year from the poker run. It will be nice to be able to give back to those who have given so generously to us over the last four years. What a special bond we have developed. Brooke is going to pursue a career in developmental disablilites thanks to the folks a special olympics!
Please know that you will always be in our hearts! We love and miss you!!

Dear Scott,

Today marks another year that has passed since you've been gone. We still miss you and your fun-loving spirit tremendously. The world is a sadder place with you gone, but heaven must be delighted! When we look at the clear, beautiful, blue skies we know you're watching over us. Thanks for the part you played in our lives.
Love,
Terri, Mike, Molly and Anna

I have often read these reflections, but it has taken till now to leave one. I have seen your daughters grow up to be young ladies,as I have seen my own grow up. I just wanted to say Brooke and Ryan look very happy together. And I know that is all a father could ask for. WE RIDE TOGETHER

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

At the beginning of the school year i met a new girl that moved into town. Her name is kelsi and she has helped me through so many things. We have so many things in common, and I feel like you brought her here to Iowa just for our family! Greg is her dad and I know that you guys ran around in high school and i know thats why i am getting along so good with her and her family.

I miss you more and more each day but I know that you are the one guiding my life right now.

Dad-
Life is hard right now. I don't know what to do about a lot of situations. If you were still here I wouldn't have to worry about a lot of them.

Please continue to sit on my shoulder and help me get through each day. .. and thanks for all the signs of approval of Ryan and I. Although you aren't here, I know you would like him!

I love you and miss you everyday. Its not the same without you. ...

Sometimes... I just need you to hug me again. :(

My goodness, Scotty... what a legacy you have left behind in your girls! We had such fun with them this past weekend. Just like their daddy, they can get you laughing until the tears pour from your eyes and stomach hurts. You'll certainly never be gone, as long as they are in a room! Brooke even had a referee in the volleyball match laughing out loud! Thanks for your strength and love. That is one of the big reasons that they are doing so well. It's sure tough not to have their daddy with them everyday, but they are doing fine, despite the challenges. Keep with the good Guardian Angel work! We miss you.....

Hi honey-
Today I witnessed something that you would have been SO very proud of!! Brooke and Bailie played volleyball together in a varsity tournament in Wapello! I know that it was your dream to see them together in Central Lee uniforms and today it happened. It was so awesome! They were so happy to be out there together and put on quite a show! I can't get over how much they remind me of you in their spirit!
I know you were with us and please know that we were thinking of you too!!
We all love and miss you so much!!

When God puts you through something, he knows that you will make it through it. I just wish that he didn't have so much faith in me! This has been really hard, but we are doing alright. Everyone misses you so much and it just isn't the same. Even three years later, it is still the toughest thing I have to face everyday. I love you Daddy!

Hi hon-
I just wanted to share a poem that Bailie has written.
It is titled "Daddy"
Often times I sit and wonder,
where would you be today?
Three years ago around this time,
You were suddenly taken away.
Our lives were changed forever,
nothing ever to be the same.
No one could understand,
just who it was to blame.
Every day I am reminded,
of what a great man you were.
Father, Son, Husband and Friend,
no matter what, we could count on you for sure.
All your friends were so dear to you,
and were such a big part of your life.
But nothing could compare,
to your two daughters and your wife.
Without you here it's not the same,
I would give anything to bring you back.
All those days of playing ball,
and convincing me to run track!
I never will forget the time,
when we were camping at the Lake.
We shot a racoon square in the eye,
and he soon became ONE-EYED JAKE.
Or playing some T-ball,
in the backyard.
And telling me to choke up,
then laughing so hard.
When we would go to Rosies,
you would order "The Mess."
And Brooke and I getting,
eggs on our dress.
Who could forget the night you got stuck,
in the PlaySkool chair.
We laughed and laughed,
because you had a wig, full of fake hair!
Fishing with you was always a blast,
we had many contests and I know this for sure,
You won most of the challenges,
such a great fisherman you were!
All of those times I will never forget,
the best days of my life, no doubt about it.
I wouldn't take one of them back,
not even a bit.
You were always there to lend a hand,
no matter how big the task.
Taking your life for a friend,
there is nothing more that God could ask.
We were so lucky to have,
such a great friend.
Gave everything you had,
until the very end.
I look at the stars and I know it's true,
you are there shining bright.
Because your favorite time of the day,
was always the night.
Someday we will be together,
no one knows when.

Hi hon-
I sit here tonight and read through all of these reflections and am again awestruck at how thoughtful people can still be, even after all of this time has passed.
Just wanted you to know, even though I am sure that you already do, that we are doing ok. The girls are getting ready to head back to school. Brooke getting ready to begin her Senior year, hard to believe, isn't it? Bailie in her sophomore year and driving, your Guardian Angel business will never get rest now!!
I won't mention any names, but we have made connection with someone that we hadn't seen since the funeral and the girls and I were so happy that he came by to see us! It was nice to get over that hurdle and now we know that we have someone else to help us out if we should ever need it.
The 4th Annual Scott Bryant Memorial Poker Run is this weekend. We have decided to donate all of the proceeds back to the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. I thought that would only be the right thing to do. Smile down on us and keep us all safe for another successful run!
Know that we think about you daily and miss you so much.
I Love You.

Hi there,
Just a quick note to let you know we're thinking about you. A young man came by our office today looking for directions to the closest golf course; my thoughts then turned to you and wondered which one you might have liked! Micki and your girls are so precious, we count ourselves lucky when we get to spend time with them. Continue to watch over them, you never know what they're going to be getting into next! :) Thanks for the legacy you left behind, you have much to be proud of!
Love ya,

Hi Honey-
Today would have been your 40th b-day, the one that you knew for quite sometime that you would never see here on earth. Please know that we still miss you so much each and every day and pray that you are at peace with the loved ones that have passed before and after you.

As the day comes closer to May 17th all I can think of is how 3 years ago today life was different than what 3 years ago tomorrow brought to all of us. Every morning when I wake up and every night before I go to bed one of the things that I look at is a picture of us from the day that you married Aunt Micki. How blessed we all were to have you in our lives and forever in all of our hearts and memories. I miss you and will love you always! -Megan

Hi hon-
Today is the day that our guys run their leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run that you so unselfishly gave your life for. I pray that they stay safe and ask you to please do your "guardian angel thing" that you do so well! On the 17th, the 3 year anniversary of your accident, Brooke, Bailie and I will return to Ames in your honor. The Special Olympic Opening Ceremonies will again gather and give an award to an "Unsung Hero" in your name. Please know that your memory will be the only thing in our hearts on that day! We miss you so much!!

Dear Scotty,

As we all prepare for another May 17th to come and go I just wanted to take a quick moment and share a little bit with you. Our tears are fewer, but still there. There is a big hole in our hearts and in our family gatherings. We miss you incredibly.

You would be so very proud of Micki and the girls. They are such strong souls and spirits. They live every day with integrity and grace. Your memory is alive and well. Even though you can't be with them, or us, the lessons of life that you left behind are leaving their mark. We all talk of you often and share our best and funniest stories!

Our girls are getting big, too. Anna was so little 3 years ago that she doesn't really remember you, but she does know you! The pictures of the two of you together are precious. Molly still misses her Uncle Scott!

When I see the beautiful clouds in the clear blue sky or the boundless ocean I think of you, sitting near our Lord and sharing stories! Someday....... until then, take care.

All our love,
Terri, Mike, Molly and Anna

Hey honey-
You have been on my mind alot, like all day, for the last few days. I just wanted to let you know that the girls and I miss you so much!! I cannot believe that in one month from today, you have been gone 3 years. Some days it feels like a few months and other days it feels longer than the 3 years. We are doing ok, we have so much support from family and alot of your buddies from the prison. They have been so much help to us and we couldn't have gotten by without all of them. We are settled into the new house. It was alot harder to move than I thought it would be. I know that you are our guardian angel and I am sure that we have kept you plenty busy these last 3 years!! The girls are doing great, growing up way too fast though. You would be very proud of them!! I know they say that time heals all wounds, but this emptiness in my heart will never be healed.
Thanks for looking over us!! I love you still and miss you more than you will ever know!!

Scott,
Not one single day goes by that I do not think about you. I still have vivid memories of the times we spent together in the weight room, golfing, riding to work together, and working together. Every time I think of the cellhouse 20 assignment we had together I smile. You are the best! You set a great example as a friend, co-worker and family man. I miss you.
