Reflections for Police Officer Edwin Hernandez

Ed, I can't believe it has been 10 years. You always had a smile on your face, and loved the job. You had so many plans for after the job, you had us all dream along with you. I was proud to serve with you, you were proud of your badge, proud of your family, and proud to be in Highway patrol. You had a chest full of medals, yet you were just as willing to help someone change a flat tire as you were to make another felony arrest. When I cross over that big county line in the sky, I bet you will be in the U-turn to clock me.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the ninth anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for the solace of all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their devotion to you through their reflections.

I had the honor of Meeting Edwin Hernandez in Puerto Rico in the late 90's. I was a rookie police officer sitting in the lobby of the hotel when I caught a glimpse of an impressive looking man,...I turned to my girlfriend at the time and I said, "That guy is a cop, no doubt in my mind." Later that day, my girlfriend (Tracy) and I were in the lobby lounge and we ran into Ed and his wife, Coralee . My girlfriend, thinking I was wrong, asked Ed "are you a cop." I was embarrassed, but he replied, yes I am, Suffolk County PD." My girlfriend told Ed that I was also a cop in New Rochelle, NY and for the next two days we had the privilege of spending time with Ed and his wife. Toward the end of the weekend, Ed and his wife gave us his telephone number and extended an open invatation to his home in Long Island. During the next year we visited the Hernandez family on a sunny Saturday afternoon on Long Island. It was time well spent in a Long Island backyard with a great family! Ed offered plenty of advice, told great stories and was genuinely a larger than life guy. I never saw Ed, Coralee or his children again. Although we spent just only just few days and hours together with Ed and his wife, it was easy to tell what a great human being he was and what great family man he was. My girlfriend and I got married 9 years later and were devastated when we learned the news. This morning I was on the internet reading articles about the late NYPD Police Officer Peter Figoski and came across this site. My wife and I no longer have the contact information for his family, so I thought that maybe someone reading this post can share my memory with his family. Rest In Peace! God Bless the Hernandez family and God Bless the families of all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. Be safe!
