To the family and coworkers of Deputy Travis Sass. As our office is continuing to morn the loss of Deputy Bill Davis EOW 11-03-03, we can feel the pain of the department and the family. I am 2 yrs younger than Travis and remember playing against him in sports as we were from rival schools. Even then I remember Travis having a certain aura around him that showed he gave more than 100% at everything that he did as I know that he gave to his job and his career. As we near Travis's home town begin the preparations to handle the funeral and the arrangements that go with it, May I say to the family and friends of Deputy Travis Sass, God Speed, God Bless, and be with us always.

Dark glasses can't hide
the tear stained eyes
of the warriors,
these men and women who aren't supposed to cry.

The silver covered
by that thin black line
an all to familiar sight this day
along with the pain that no one can hide.

Taps sounds, the guns go off
it only serves as a reminder
of what we all have lost.
one more deputy gone

But the hurt felt will last so long
for no longer in the streets of hell
a final call is given in honor
to another one that fell.

Deputy Sass was not only an outstanding officer but one of the finest people whom I have had the privilege to know. You will be missed, but never forgotten. Thank you for all that you taught me.

We know the pain that you are going through. I only wish that we could ease your pain. Know that the wonderful family of law enforcement will be there to help you through this.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Travis did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Travis be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Sass' family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Travis is part of a huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Travis was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and fellow officers of Deputy Travis Sass. I lost my husband to the call of duty on April 4th of this year. I wish I could offer those "magic" words that would take away the hurt and the loss that you are feeling. As you know, there are no magic words. I wish I could tell you that it gets easier with time, but I can't. However, I can tell you that you are all loved and we do share in your pain. I can tell you that although I do not live in your community, I am grateful to Deputy Sass for the protection he offered as he went forth to answer the call of duty. You are all in my prayers. May God give you strength to make it through the days, months and years ahead.

I worked with Travis at LCSO in the jail before moving to Texas. Travis was a 1st Class Deputy as well as a 1st Class person. My heart was saddened to hear this news.

I enjoyed my time at LCSO with ya Travis. While not on the same Platoon you were always in a good mood and were fun to joke with when relieving each other on "call-in".

Rest easy Travis. Job well done.
