Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer C. Robert Bennett

I can't imagine losing 3 officers at one time...beyond
tragic. I'm glad your eternal life assurance policy was
paid in full. Although I didn't know you in this life, I look
forward to meeting you in the next....where Jesus Himself will wipe away all tears. God bless your families who miss you.

bennett , you have been the hardest for me to leave a reflection for . i have gone to others site ,but each time i come to yours , i remember seeing you lying there on the ground before they covered you . i did'nt go into the apt. and see carlos and harley because i could'nt take it . being there and knowing that we let you guys down , we did'nt get there fast enough . i remember looking at you while we were clearing the apts. hoping that those guys were still there so that we could provide our justice ... no justice the sheriff's tact unit got them first ... my brother you are not forgotten and never will be . GOD knew your plan long before we knew you and all i can say is thank you my brother for your service , for the back-up , and oh yeah the car stop when you did'nt know i was your sister in blue at the same precinct . i know , i remember you blushing when i told you i worked day shift . you were so professional even though i ragged you about it . i don't want to remember you that day on the ground , your life stood for so much more than that . rest easy my brother we have the watch from here... it was an honor sharing the thin blue with you...

Three Heroes in Blue

Three heroes in blue;
three men I never knew.

They went to work that fateful day;
not knowing the ultimate price they would pay.

To protect and serve was their creed;
they were a special breed.

Three heroes in blue;
three officers with hearts pure and true.

They lost their lives that afternoon;
gone from here too soon.

Three heroes in blue;
three souls gone to Heaven anew.

Dedicated to Officers Bennett, Chisholm, and Owen;
who lost their lives on June 17,2004
serving on the Birmingham Alabama Police Force.

COB: City of Birmingham; Chisholm Owen Bennett

Rob in 44 days it will be the 2 year anniversary of your death. I can not believe that it has been that long. You are thought about often by me and the rest of the family and are dearly missed. I know I will see you again in heaven one day.

When God Made Police Officers . . .

When the Lord was creating Police Officers, He was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said,
"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the requirements on this
order? A Police Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle their uniform."

"They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day."

"They have to be in top physical condition at all times,
running on black coffee and half-eaten meals, and they have to have six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands . . . no way!!"

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before they ask, 'May I see what's in there, sir?'"
(when they already know and wish they'd taken that accounting job) "Another pair here in the side of their head for their partner's safety, and another pair of eyes here in front so they can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be alright, ma'am,' when they know it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching His sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the Police Officer very slowly. "Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet," said the Lord, "it can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in its sleep, detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop . . . and still it keeps its sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Police Officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced, "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."

"That's not a leak," said the Lord. "It's a tear."

"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."

"You're a genius," said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," He said.

I have been a part of the Bennett family for along time. My family and the Bennett family considered Rob and I to be "brothers". I miss him alot. It is tough knowing that he is apart from us, but knowing that he is in Heaven and seeing him live through his family has been and will continue to be a blessing. Rob, we will see you soon.

Having just gone through the tragedy of losing Deputy Michael Arruda, I cannot fathom the horror of losing three officers at one time. Knowing what we have gone through and continue to go through, I can only offer condolences and prayers to the Birmingham Police Department and wish them strength and peace. I know your three officers are with our Mike and will be guardian angels to you as Michael is to us. God bless.

Los Angeles County Sheriff

July 28, 2004

To the Birmingham Police and the families of Officers Bennett, Chisholm and Owens; may you take comfort in knowing that they are out of harms way now and are taking their watch up above. I learned of this tragedy at my nephew's funeral, Los Angeles County Sheriff Michael Arruda whose end of watch was June 9, 2004 and he passed away on June 15th. It was horrible reading the newspaper at the hotel and seeing that three police officers were gunned down trying to do their job.

My heart goes out to you all, as I am still grieving about my nephew, I shall add you three to my prayers, also. God Bless
