My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Harley did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Harley be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Chisholm's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Harley is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Harley was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Officer Chisholm for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

In loving memory of P.O. Harley Chisholm: Sometimes my heart is just too heavy to try to write something so at times it takes a couple of days before I feel like I can respond. My heart is heavy for all the victims here cuz there are so many! I feel for his mother and sister at such
a tragic time as well as his co-workers and friends. How much pain there is in all of this! I am sharing in your grief. This is God size pain, but Christ is able to carry our burdens. There is none greater than Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We don't get to Heaven based on what we do, but what He did for us by dying on that cross for everyone's sin. AMEN! There is now a huge void that cannot be filled. God be with all those who mourn and may His promises lift all those with heavy hearts for many years to come.

I was shocked and saddened when I saw that my fellow Marine and friend Harley had been killed. He was my second in command when I was the Detachment Commander for the security force at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica in 1989. He was a fine man and an outstanding Marine who will be greatly missed.

TO:The family;loved ones;friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER: O, gentle Lord! Keep the day/night watch with me.As I begin my tour of duty ,I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties.Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think that no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence.Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord,I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty,to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer ; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth ,may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well.AMEN.***REST IN PEACE*** Sent to you by the father of First Class Officer J.D.Koeppen,Capital City Raleigh NC,Trooper D.C.Koeppen,NJ State Police and Cadet Officer A.M.Koeppen,Wilmington NC.

I was heartsick to read about the deaths of three of Birmingham's finest. I can't imagine the pain and grief of their department.

Officer Chisholm and all officers who have given their lives in the line of duty deserve our utmost respect and admiration. May God comfort his family - and may God be with his brothers and sisters at Birmingham PD.

Thank you for your public service in law enforcement and to those of your family who are left behind, I grieve...while there is pain, I am reminded that "weeping endures but for a night but joy comes in the morning". I know what it is to suffer in such a tragic loss, but I know as well the comfort of the Holy Spirit. My prayers are that as you heal, you will carry the torch that your loved one has handed you and his life will be carried on to others who need it. My heart is with you during this time.

There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.

You were called into this profession and our Lord and Savior has blessed you because:
According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because it is honored by God.

To the family of Officer Harley Chisholm III and the Birmingham Police Department, your extended family of Law Enforcement Officers grieves with you during this time. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around each of you and comfort you during this most difficult time.

You gave the ultimate sacrifice for your fellow man, your life.
While serving, defending, and protecting others in your community.
Rest easy with our other fallen Brothers and Sisters, we have the watch now.

To all my brothers and sisters, please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Please pray for this officer's family, agency, and friends as they struggle with this tragedy.
May God be with you every day, please remember, we are a part of the largest family in the world and when one hurts we all hurt.

Though our badges and uniforms may be different, our mission is the same. We will continue the fight in your honor.

Ofc. Harley Chisholm III,

Sir, We have lost another brother in our law enforcement family and are truly broken. We will carry on in your memory and in your honor and bravery. Thank You for being willing to go where few are willing to go. It is a special thing to be able to look at your life and say that you truly made a difference and you did. I pray for your family and for our family as a whole. I am angered in the cowardice that is played out everday to our loss. But your life meant something and the coward who killed you, well his life means nothing. Our seperation is only temporary and I hope that while we are here we might make a difference as you have. Thank You Brother. "Poi si torno' all' eterna fontana."
