May God give you strength during this time of your loss. Officer Owens is just a few years older than my Dad and I can't imagine what you all must be going through right now. Lift you heads to the heavens and ask God for help during the upcoming weeks. I know words can never help during this time, but I just wanted you to know that I am praying for all of you and will continue. May God Bless you all.

I don't know you and I don't know your family... I don't even live where you live..but i do know your pain. Losing someone that you love, whether it be from violence or not, is one of the toughest things in life. Just remember that God is there to heal your pain and to dry your tears. May the blessed memories of your family member soothe your pain and help you in this time of need. God Bless.

Having attended Police Memorial Week in Washington DC this year I am reminded that we are all part of a much larger law enforcement family. The loss of one Officer diminishes us all. The loss of three is devistating. God bless those fallen Officers and all those who serve with the Birmingham Police.

There are no words or thoughts that will ever assuage the saddness we all feel over this tragedy. My prayers go out to each officer and their families. We can take solace in the fact that God's punishment will be swift and sure to the thoughtless human waste that committed these despicable acts. May God bless and keep you close to his side.

It is a tragedy to lose one officer, let alone three at one time. We are burying one of ours on Monday 6-21 and my heart goes out to all of you. This man here is the definition of community policing where everyone in the neighborhood knew him and loved him. Here is a man that was so committed to his job and community that he is still out pushing a sled at 58 answering calls for service. My prayers are with your family and I am humbled by your service.

The Sound of Silence

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

'Fools' said I, 'You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.'
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, 'The words of the prophets

are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.'
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

The thoughts and prayer’s of the Garner Police Department go out to the families of these fallen hero’s. Words can never express the loss we feel when an officer is killed in the line of duty. It’s the career we chose, a lifestyle we live, and a job we love. My God be with the Birmingham Police Department and the families of these officers.

Every day we come to work not knowing if it will be the last. We put on our uniforms to do a job that we love to do and that you dedicate your life to .I respect you for the years of service that you have served to the people who so often could even care if you lived another day. What will it take for people to respect the peace you have created so they can live without harm or fear. I know that there are many who do appreciate what you have done and would stop to help a Officer in need so to them I say that we as Law Enforcement embrace you who really do appreciate what we have given our life to serve.Your last tour of duty will only make us stronger and value life as an officer more and think about the people who knew you. You will always have a brother in arms BY YOUR SIDE.Rest in peace your work here is done

Officer Owens,

We are all angered and deeply hurt that this unthinkable event has taken place . . . the murder of 3 of Birmingham's Finest. As I have detailed in Officer Bennett's reflection, and stated in Officer Chisholm's reflection . . . we will not allow your murder to be in vain. We will never forget your unselfish and dedicated 26 years of police service in Birmingham. We will not forget that you were a warrior and walked the path of the warrior . . . protecting, at the risk of serious bodily harm and death, the citizens of Birmingham, our home and great State of Alabama, and our great Nation. We will never forget the sacrifice you and your brother Birmingham Officers made, my brother.

We all give "some" . . . you have given "all." Now, you go rest high on that mountain Carlos . . . we will proudly cover your post on the thin blue line.

With brotherly love and utmost respect, Jim Crotty (Former Richmond, VA Police Officer.)

P.S. To Birmingham Police Officer Michael Collins . . . thank you for entering that battle to protect your brother Officers . . . we are all thankful that you survived the shooting and are not seriously injured. You are a warrior.

Jim Crotty, Special Agent (Ret.)
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms

My thoughts & prayers to family and the "law enforcement family" of all three of these fallen officers. Unreal to lose one but to have three leave in the same incident is just inconceivable. My thoughts also to the Communications Officer on the radio at the time and all of the Communications Officers. I will keep you all close in my prayers. GOD BLESS
