I met Darren only a couple of times, but the impression that I got was that he was good friend to all that knew him. He will be terribly missed by his family and co-workers. My thought and prayers are with the Medlin family and his fellow officers of the Grapevine Police Department. Go rest high on that mountain Darren, rest in the arms of the lord.

There are never words to express ones feelings from such a tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Darren, his family, and to his extended family: the men and women around the world who wear the badge. To paraphrase ODMP's words, It's not just Grapevine PD who lost an officer and friend, the entire nation did.

God Bless those you left behind Officer Medlin.

I AM HOME IN HEAVEN, DEAR ONES;
OH, SO HAPPY AND SO BRIGHT!
THERE IS PERFECT JOY AND BEAUTY
IN THE EVERLASTING LIGHT.

ALL THE PAIN AND GRIEF IS OVER,
EVERY RESTLESS TOSSING PASSED;
I AM NOW AT PEACE FOREVER,
SAFELY HOME IN HEAVEN AT LAST.

DID YOU WONDER I SO CALMLY
TROD THE VALLEY OF THE SHADE?
OH! BUT JESUS LOVE ILLUMINED
EVERY DARK AND FEARFUL GLADE.

AND HE CAME HIMSELF TO MEET ME
IN THAT WAY SO HARD TO TREAD;
AND WITH JESUS ARM TO LEAB ON,
COULD i HAVE ONE DOUBT OR DREAD?

THEN YOU MUST GRIEVE SO SORELY,
FOR I LOVE YOU DEARLY STILL:
TRY TO LOOK BEYOND EARTH'S SHADOWS,
PRAY TO TRUST OUR FATHER'S WILL.

THERE IS WORK STILL WAITING FOR YOU,
SO YOU MUST NOT IDLY STAND;
DO IT NOW, WHILE LIFE REMAINETH-
YOU SHALL REST IN JESUS' LAND.

WHEN THAT WORK IS ALL COMPLETED,
HE WILL GENTLY CALL YOU HOME;
OH, THE RAPTURE OF THAT MEETING,
OH THE JOY TO SEE YOU COME!

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend. Deputy Jeffrey Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
