Reflections for Police Officer Michael Harry Wise, II

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Tonight, June 6, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Michael H. Wise II who died in the line of duty just yesterday.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Wise's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

My thoughts and prayers are sent to your family, friends, and colleagues with the Reading, PA Police Department Officer Wise. I’M FREE

AUTHOR UNKNOWN

DON’T GRIEVE FOR ME, FOR NOW I’M FREE
I’M FOLLOWING THE PATH GOD LAID FOR ME.
I TOOK HIS HAND WHEN I HEARD HIM CALL.
I TURNED MY BACK AND LEFT IT ALL.
I COULD NOT STAY ANOTHER DAY.
TO LAUGH, TO LOVE, TO WORK OR PLAY.
TASKS LEFT UNDONE MUST STAY THAT WAY.
I FOUND A PEACE AT CLOSE OF DAY.
IF MY PARTING HAS LEFT A VOID,
THEN FILL IT WITH REMEMBERED JOY.
A FRIENDSHIP SHARED, A LAUGH, A KISS,
AH YES, THESE THINGS I TOO WILL MISS.
BE NOT BURDENED WITH TIMES OF SORROW;
I WISH YOU THE SUNSHINE OF TOMORROW.
MY LIFE’S BEEN FULL, I’VE SAVORED MUCH;
GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD TIMES,
A LOVED ONE’S TOUCH.
PERHAPS MY TIME SEEMED ALL TOO BRIEF;
DON’T LENGTHEN IT NOW WITH UNDUE GRIEF;
LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS AND SHARE WITH ME;
GOD WANTED ME NOW.
HE SET ME FREE.

Another hero has been taken from us. Even though I did not know you personnally, all of us in law enforcement feel your loss. I know there is a terrible hole torn in the hearts of your family and friends, and there is little that can be said to help. I remember the words of the Lord when he said, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God." May the gentle hands of the Lord touch those left behind with his healing touch. Rest in peace until the last day when we will all be raised up for the final roll call.

There are people in this world who dedicate their lives to making our lives better...safer, at the risk of losing their own. They don't risk their lives to achieve personal wealth. They rarely receive the respect that such dedication and bravery deserves. They ask for nothing in return. They risk their lives to serve and protect us all; even those who do not appreciate such sacrifice. Their names often go unmentioned in the great stories of heroes and legends. And yet they put on the uniform that they have pledged their lives to, and they kiss their husbands or wives and children not knowing if they will be coming home at the end of their watch. And all to often, they do not. These are the silent heroes that keep us safe so that we may live our lives without fear. These are women and men, like Police Officer Michael H. Wise II, whose love for others outweighs their concern for their own personal safety.

This is undoubtedly one of the most tragic days in Reading, Pennsylvania’s history. On behalf of Carpenter Technology’s Department of Health, Safety, and Asset Protection Services, I send my condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers of Police Officer Michael H. Wise II. May he rest in peace and never be forgotten.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God". "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

Matthew 5, Verse 3-9

Mike, your sacrifice and dedication to your community will never be forgotten. Your memory will be forever carried on by the lives you touched through your service to others, the people you have worked with through the years that will miss their brother but hold him in their heart whenever they are called into difficult situations, and the family that loves you always. While many will on this day say you were a hero; they will be wrong. You were a hero all the time. My heart goes out to the Wise family, truly one of the most gracious, down to earth, kindest,true to the heart, families in our community. Mike was a reflection of that family and is a great loss to this community and this country. As we greive Mike's death, remember his life with a smile for the good he brought to this world, and the stewardship he provided to his fellow man. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike's Family, Friends, his past brothers that have served with him in various other respects, and his Brothers with the Reading City Police Department. We all feel your sorrow. Rest in Peace Brother Wise. May the wings of angels protect you now.

My heart and prayers go out to the family,friends and co-workers of Off. Michael Wise. What a senseless tragedy. I have visited this site everyday since the death of my niece, Det. P.O. Jennifer Fettig (E.O.W. 2-16-04). It so hard to believe that another officer has died in the line of duty. May God watch over you. He now has another angel on patrol for him.

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Officer Wise for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.

For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.
