Vickie,
A brother in our ranks now walks a heavenly beat beside you; and I'm reminded how deeply I miss you. Heaven has been enriched that much more because of you. Though you could not have children of your own, I will always be proud to call you mom. I miss you and I will always love you... Your surrogate son - Avery

Vickie,

We miss you greatly and you will never be forgotten. We lost another officer on Wednesday, 8-10-2005. Terry has come to join you in heaven. Rest in peace.

I was working extra-duty about a mile away from you on the night you were taken from us. I see your sister almost every week when I work the movie theater. There are many times when I have asked the powers that be why did they not let me get there faster, but I realize that there is a reason for everything that happens. Gods speed and may God Bless your family.

I think of Vickie every day. She was the sweetest and so thoughtful to her fellow officers. She bought Christmas presents for each person on her squad and always kept our sweet tooth satisfied with goodies. She was earning extra money by working security at a Wal Mart on her day off. I'm so sorry Vickie, you and Willie would have loved retirement together.

Vickie, we had met only briefly. but in the few moments we spoke, I was impressed by your experience and knowledge. I attended your funeral service. I couldn't stop thinking how unfair it is that such a caring person could be taken from us, but understanding life is only for God to know. I held back the tears as I stood in formation. I fired one of the rifles in the 21 salute. I still thought of how unfair it was. Vikie I carry on with the knowledge that you are in heaven and are no longer suffering. I serve as an officer to honor the fallen, to serve the public trust and to help ease the suffering of the living. you are forever in my thoughts and prayers Vickie.
God Bless all who have served, all who have lost and all who remain. We will all be together again someday.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, May 22, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Lieutenant Vickie Wax who died in the line of duty on this date one year ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Lt. Wax's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Vick, Its been a year and you are still in my thoughts every day. You took me under your wing all those years ago, and I credit my professional life to your guidance. I am comforted by the thought that now you rest beneath the wings of angels. You walk the beat on golden streets. Just know that you have left an impression on so many hearts and souls that you shall never be forgotten. I sometimes think you wtill walk beside each of us here at BRPD guiding us through those hard calls. God bless you and keep you, Vick. I only hope that when my name is called you'll be one of those there to greet me.

I have always believed it a benefit to have a great memory.... until the past year of my life.

This lady, I barely knew....she probably knew me less. I wasn't a part of her personality, her close friends, and I had very few recollections of the three or so times we spoke (other than her asking, "who are you?")

Should I have stayed home that night, I would have never thought that a shooting at Wal Mart must be a prank, I would have never heard, "OFFICER DOWN, OFFICER DOWN"....I wouldn't have heard an officer exclaim "First degree murder of a police officer, gentlemen", just before we mounted the posse. I wouldn't have seen the parked getaway car, praying that my shotgun sights would encircle a person wearing a handcuff on a single wrist.

I am sure I was near dehydration after the tears that fell during the processional. I realized then, my sorrow from a passing acquaintance paled in comparison to those that served under her.

I wish I was able to forget the sounds and the sights of that night. I promise, .......I promise that I will allow nothing to hinder my dedication to help our brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles.

People who you may not have remembered, will never forget you.

Ride Along

So you don’t like the ticket I just gave you.
Well, come take a ride with me.
A trip to the scene of an accident.
Where a person now struggles for freedom, and for life.
All because someone was in a hurry, or late for work.

You say you didn’t call me and you don’t need my help.
That this is a family matter and none of my business.
Come take a ride with me.
Where a child now cowers in the nearest corner, or bedroom closet.
They cover their ears and ask god “ please make them stop”.
Still think no one needs my help.

You’ve said all we do is eat donuts and drink coffee.
Come take a ride with me.
On the countless days after taking four calls in an hour.
We think we have time to sit down for dinner.
Only to be call away again.

You think we’re cold and have no heart.
Well, come take a ride with me.
To a place where the pipes now lay to rest.
A brother or sister who gave their life, for someone like you.
A place where tears fall like rain for their family,
For our family, and yes even for you.
Yeah, come take a ride with me.

In the blink of an eye for the way that she tried, she paid the ultimate price.... Along with all others whom we honor each spring with words that we speak and the songs that we sing. Lies the question we all ask, which no one can say.....This woman gave her all....Did I come close today?

It has been several months since the day you were taken from us by the coward. I still think of you and the kind things that you did. I know Willie and Bonnie are still hurting very much and miss you more than words can ever say. Rest in peace and put in the good word for those who are to follow with our Lord. You will not be forgotten.

Lt. Vickie Wax would work extra duty day & night keeping our perimeter around the complex safe. Always there to assit our other Security Officers with anything they needed. Lt. Wax was making big plans in giving one more year of Tour Of Duty then retiring so her and her husband could travel. Its the little things you take for granted that you do not realize until its gone, The cheerful smile as she walks up to you at the main gate in the mornings greeting everyone with a big smile and a hello, always asking how is the family?
The little wave of goodbye and smile she would give when leaving in her patrol unit at the end of the shift will always be remembered by all for now she has given the final wave of goodbye. The ExxonMobil Security Force extends their sorrow to the Wax family & co-workers at the Baton Rouge Police Dept. You are all in our prayers everyday.
GOD SPEED VICKIE---WE LOVE YOU.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend. Deputy Jeffrey Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Vickie did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Vickie be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Lieutenant Wax's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to her husband. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Vickie is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Vickie was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Lieutenant Wax for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

To the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Wax. You are not alone. My prayers go out to you. I have visited this web site every day since the death of my niece, Detroit P.O. Jennifer Fettig (e.o.w. 2-16-04). It hurts knowing that another officer has died in the line of duty.
May God bless you and watch over you.
