Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Christopher Michael Burgert

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Christopher did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Christopher be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Burgert's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Christopher is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Christopher was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

For the Courange...
To face the daily demands and challenges most never know in an entire lifetime;
For the Character...
Behind the badge that gives real meaning to words like"faithfulness" and"integrity" ,
For the concern...
That makes justice possible... that makes peace a reality in our community and nation.
This comes with the Thanks too seldom said...
With adoration too deep to express.

Rest in Peace my brothers we have the watch.

TO: The family;loved ones;friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER:- O,gentle Lord! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty,I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm.Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people.Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and saftey. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted.Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord ,I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty,to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer;and after my tour of duty is over here on earth ,may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN ***REST IN PEACE*** Sent to you by the father of Officer First Class J.D.Koeppen ,Capital City Raleigh NC and Trooper D.C.Koeppen,NJ State Police

REST EASY SIR FOR YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!!!!

A PART OF AMERICA DIED

SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY,
AND A PART OF AMERICA DIED.
A PIECE OF OUR COUNTRY HE SWORE TO PROTECT WILL BE BURIED
WITH HIM AT HIS SIDE.
THE SUSPECT WHO KILLED HIM WILL STAND UP IN COURT, WITH HIS
COUNSEL DEMANDING HIS RIGHTS, WHILE A WIDOWED MOTHER MUST
WORK FOR HER KIDS AND SPEND ALONE MANY LONG NIGHTS.
THE BEAT THAT HE WORKED WAS A BATTLEFIELD, TOO.
JUST AS IF HE’ED GONE OFF TO WAR. THOUGH THE FLAG OF OUR
NATION WON’T FLY AT HALF MAST, TO HIS NAME THEY WILL ADD A GOLD
STAR. YES, SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY, IT HAPPENED IN
YOUR TOWN OR MINE. WHILE WE SLEPT IN A COMFORT BEHIND OUR
LOCKED DOORS.
A COP PUT HIS LIFE ON THE LINE. NOW HIS GHOST WALKS THE BEAT ON
A DARK CITY STREET, AND HE STAND AT EACH NEW ROOKIE’S SIDE, HE
ANSWERED THE CALL AND GAVE US HIS ALL, AND A PART OF AMERICA
DIED.

POEM FOR ALL LEO’S KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY!

I am saddened to learn of more law enforcement deaths. I hate knowing we live in such a cruel world. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Deputy Burgert's family.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

I graduated the police academy with Deputy Burgert. He was an outstanding person, quiet, but ready to lead. When I learned of the incident, and who was involved, I cried harder than ever. Chris, is a brother. I say "is" because he will live on in memory. I send my sincere condolences to his son, wife, mother and father, and the entire family. Chris will never be forgotten.

My wife and I send our condolences to the families of Deputy Sheriff Christopher Burgert and his partner, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. It is so sad to hear about the deaths of fellow officers but isn't it wonderful how other officers and their families gather round to offer support? This is what keeps us going in the face of the senseless violence we deal with daily.

Our love and our support goes out to the families and fellow officers who grieve today.
