Ricky,
This year will be our 20 year Anniversary. As I go through our academy photos I am reminded of how kind and funny you were. You had smile that would light up any room. You are missed terribly and will never be forgotten as the gentle giant that you were. Missing you today my friend.

I am a recruit for the los angeles county sheriffs' department. I am training for a different agency but it always pains me to hear when an officers life has been taken from any agency. My heart goes out to your family. Your life was unexpectedly taken while preforming your duties as an officer of the law. I hope when I finish my training for the LASD that I may wear my uniform proudly as Officer Lizarraga does in his picture and serve the city to the best of my abilities. May you rest in peace Officer Lizarraga.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

I take a pause on this date each year and reflect not only on that horrific night, but what an inspiration you were to me and all of our classmates in the academy. You were larger than life and always had an encouraging word. Rest In Peace brother

This story is heart breaking. This Officer wore his uniform proudly as shown in his photo, which was likely a graduation photo. Rest easy brother, so for your loss and your family. Much love.

OFFICER LIZARRAGA WAS ONLY 31 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. IT IS ALMOST AMAZING THAT HE WAS HIT ONCE IN THE STOMACH JUST BELOW HIS VEST, AND I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT LIZARRAGA WAS IN THE WRONG PLACE , AT THE WRONG TIME . THIS SHOULD OF NEVER HAPPEN TO HIM, IT WAS A SENSELESS ACT OF MURDER, AND I ASK WHY DID IT HAVE TO HAPPEN AND WHAT MUST WE DO AS A SOCIETY TO PREVENT YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN POLICE OFFICERS FROM DYING IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND ARE SURVIVED BY WIVES, PARENTS , BROTHERS AND SISTERS, SONS AND DAUGHTERS WHO LOVED THEM DEARLY BUT NEVER EVER ADVISED NOT TO JOIN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

I was a P-1 in SOW and worked in the area from 1989 - 90. God Bless you and your family. Rest in Peace brother. It would have been an honor to have worked an A-car with you. Your courage (and your partner's courage) are not forgotten. Continue patrol...Keep watch over us.

I recall this murder clearly because it went down near our division

boundary.

I also recall the investigating detective, a seasoned veteran pro that

everyone respected, saying that the surviving partner did everything

right that day. The suspect wanted to kill a cop, plain and simple.

It was a

scene of domestic violence that we coppers handled all the time.

Tragically, this time, the male half was a gangster who wanted to

kill one of us.

It is up to us surviving officers to remember this incident, keep

our heads on a swivel, take nothing for granted and keep

everyone safe at these calls. We also must honor his memory

by comforting those who carry on, be they partners, friends

or family. That is the best legacy possible in an imperfect world.

The candlelight vigil for Ofcr. Lizarraga was a needed pause from

the everyday crunch of patrol. Our partners and wives gathered

that evening to honor the one that his Newton partners called

'Little Captain' because his captain and he shared the same

last name.

Rest in peace, partner. It has been ten years today but we

remember. We always will.

Miss you bro.....this is always a strange week for me. Although my birthday is a few days before your passing, in my world both days will forever be linked together. I'll never forget that Friday as I was on my way to start my birthday celebration when I started receiving the worst calls in the history of my life. Anyways.....I can't believe that it will be 10 years this Thursday. We're really happy that you are once again being honored.

Oh, and thanks to Diego and Talia I've finally enjoyed my last 2 birthdays :)

Love you.

I'm sorry I didn't get on here on 2/20 to say this, but know that you are still remembered and still missed - your loss took away a small part of me personally, and even though I never met you personally, I will never forget you.
