Reflections for Police Officer Matthew Edmond Bowens

This reflection is to let all of the living and the past officers know something. You have people in the public that love and respect you. I am from a family of police officers and my little brother has chosen his path now as a full time officer in Ohio. I have chosen the less exciting path of Loss Prevention Managment. Although I am not one of you, I feel from my genes that I am. I love and respect you officers and thank God that you answered your calling. May God eternally bless and protect you.

I REMEMBER UR EOW LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. IT WAS MY FIRST WEEK IN THE POLICE ACADEMY. MY HEART AND MIND WAS RACING BECAUSE I KNEW THAT MANY ARE CALLED AND FEW ARE CHOSEN. IT WAS HARD FOR ME KNOWING THAT TWO OF MY OWN WERE TAKEN IN SUCH A HORRIBLE WAY, BUT THEN I REMEMBERED THAT GOD DOES THINGS ON HIS OWN TIME. THANK YOU FOR THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. THERE ARE NO WORDS THAT CAN EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE THAT I HAVE FOR YOU AND OFFICER FETTIG. MAY YOU WALK THE GOLDEN STREETS OF HEAVEN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD.

Although this is my first written reflection I have come to this page many times and have had many self reflectons.
Everytime I put my uniform on I think of you and the morning hours when I received the phone call you were shot. I remember J. Sko calling me in disaray not knowing all the details, I remember calling your parents to let them know, I remember walking in their house seeing your dad and not knowing how to tell what I knew. I remember seeing you at the hospital laying on the stretcher under a white sheet that was starting to become spoted with blood. I remember the last time I saw you making sure you had your cap shield. I remember our last words.

You are my friend and I truely miss you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Matt... I remember when I was a senior at LPHS...and you came into the school to show everyone about your job with DPD. You walked in there so proud...and that day is when I first started thinking about working in law enforcement. Thank you so much for the sacrifice you made. You will never know how much of an impact you had on many lives....including mine. See ya brother!

Matt,

You have and never will be forgotten. I think of you still, and tell the story of the talk we had that night you were murdered. Remember in the garage just before on duty RollCall. You just returned that night from furlough, and i was just leaving to start my (S/8). We talked about taking that motorcycle trip to chicago IL.

Well guess well have to take that trip when we meet again. Please continue to keep an eye on us down here, and watch our back as you always did.

I never got to meet you personally, but after reading these reflections I feel as though we've met before. Matt, it takes a very strong individual to do the job you did. Just last year I lost a friend in the line of duty - Jason Makowski of the Dearborn Heights Police Department. I remember seeing you father at his funeral, he was speaking about how no body really understands the pain we feel - HE WAS SO RIGHT! I hope he knows that he has so much support for that bill he trying to get passed - I SIGNED IT and so should everybody else.

Rest easy, you sacrifice will never be forgotten and you wil forever be in my prayers.

Wanted to stop in and leave a reflection to let you know that you have not been forgotten. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones. I came across an old Jewish Proverb the other day and it said, "The only truly dead are those that have been forgotten." You will never be forgotten and your name live on forever on the many memorials where it appears for the hero you are.
