Reflections for Constable Donald McMurray Ouzts

REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER. WE'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE.

LT. RUDY TISDALE
WILLIAMSBURG S.O.

December 9, 2003

To Constable Ouzts family and co-workers:

I am truly sorry for your loss. There are no words which will lessen your hurt, so I will offer my prayers instead. I pray that God will give you strength in these next days and weeks and that God will comfort your heart in the months ahead.

This law enforcement family is like no other. When my dad was killed in the line of duty just over one year ago, the law enforcement community gave us the most amazing showing of love and support. The kindness was overwhelming. I pray that you find that same abundance of love and support in these days and months ahead. When my dad died, the community felt our loss, and I hope that you know we feel this loss as well.

I am grateful to these officers, and to all who have died before them, who were willing to give the supreme sacrifice in order to protect my life and the lives of others. At my dad's funeral, the minister said that my dad didn't die doing what he loved, he LIVED doing what he loved. I hope that brings you some of the comfort that it has brought me in the year that my dad has been gone.

"Greater love hath no man than this, than a man who lay down his life for a friend."

Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.

"Greater love hath no man, than he would lay down his life for another."
Bless this brave officer, who went to the aid of his brother officer, and gave his life in service. Bless his family and friends at this most difficult of time. May the memories they have of their officer in happier times help to ease the pain they're feeling now.
Rest easy, Brother, we will not forget.

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

Rest in peace brother, and God bless your family and fellow Officers during this difficult time.

I was driving down to Columbia East bound on I-26 on Monday morning. I must have driven by at least 30 SLED and other law enforcement cars running Code West bound on I-26. I knew that something serious had gone wrong and I began to make phone calls to see if my family had heard anything on TV or on the radio. To all the family, friends and fellow officers of Deputy Sheriff Danny Wilson and State Constable Donnie M. Ouzts, my prayers and thoughts are with you all. God Bless.
