I have been where you fear to go....
I have seen what you fear to see........
I have done what you fear to do.........
All these things I've done for you.
I am the one you leaned upon .............
The one you cast your scorn upon.......
The one you brought your troubles to......
All these people I've been for you.
The one you asked to stand apart........
The one you felt should have no heart.
The one you called the man in blue......
But I am human, just like you.
And through the years I've come to see
Just how much you relied on me.
Although of thanks there was little sign..........
As I stood for you
On that thin blue line...................
Now take my badge and take my gun.....
For now my tour of duty is done..........
Do you think that you can be
All those things you asked of me......?
ANON

To all the loved ones, friends, and brothers and sisters of the badge that your officer has left behind, I offer my heartfelt condolences and prayers.
Nothing can replace him, but know that he did not lose his life-he gave it. May the memories of happy times with him sustain you, and may you know that your loved one is safe now and watches over you still.

My fiance Dennis was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Richard did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Richard be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Meyer's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his family. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Richard is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Richard was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

Thank you Deputy Meyer for your dedication to our profession, to the community you served, and for your selfless sacrifice. To his wife and child my deepest condolences and continued prayers. Memories will ease the pain and keep him close in spirit. He will always be a Hero to those of us left behind, and will have our backs when we need him. Two years to the day, we lost another young Deputy in the line of duty and the pain of that loss is still fresh. I know that Billy met Deputy Meyer at Heaven's Gates and gave him the grand tour. Enjoy guys, we'll see you again.....
