Officer Brown,

Sir, thank you for making a difference in this life. While others talk about you did it. What else could we do in this life. I pray the Lord will hold your family in the palm of his hand. No one is ever forgotten in our law enforcement family and no one suffers alone. Your are a light in this dark world and will remain so forever. Thank You from the deepest part of our souls.

The police officer stood and faced his Maker,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, police officer how shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To your Maker, have you been true?"
The police officer, with squared shoulders, said "No sir, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed by a cry for help though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, please forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fears.
But if you have a place for me here, well...it need not be too grand.
I never expected or had too much so if you don't...I'll understand."
There was silence all around the room where the saints respectfully stood.
As the police officer waited quietly, for the judgment...bad or good.
"Step forward now, police officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell."

Hey Marine, I just got off of the phone with your brother Malcom. I called him to share a few stories about you at Paris Island, South Carolina, Marine Recruit Depot.

Life is real funny you know. I was looking on the ODMP and saw your picture. I got sick to my stomach when I saw it. You were in my platoon 2120 in Second Battalion “Fox” Company in October 1993 - December 1993. I was a one of the squad leaders in our platoon. You were so friggin funny. You always kept all 73 recruits laughing and the moral high when times were tough. You were one of the smallest recruits in the platoon, yet you always carried your load. You were picked on by the drill instructors because you were the “comedian” of the group and they loved play head games with you, but you never gave up and you showed the true character of a Marine. You made my 13 week stay there more enjoyable. For that I thank you my brother.

You were the Protestant Lay Leader of our platoon. I was sharing some funny stories about your duties with your brother Malcom. I told him about how you were to say the nightly prayer before rack time for all of the Protestant recruits. I still remember seeing you down there at the front of the squad bay near the quarter deck, standing in your skivvies, with your hands crossed in front of you as you prayed out loud for us.

Man it is so hard to believe. You are a great man and “Once A Marine, Always A Marine.” We are all better men for having known you. Keep the streets guarded up there for all of us. When I get there I will relieve you of your guard duty. May God be with you and your family. There is no doubt in my mind that you are saying the prayers for everyone at night before rack time and keeping smiles on everyone’s faces just as you did ours with your gentle humor and laughs.

SEMPER FI! ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE.

Many days I probably passed you on Main St and simply waved and moved on. It happens like that and we never know that tragedy is just around the corner. I am sorrowed that another agency has lost a good officer, another family has lost an important member and that the world has lost another guardian of the peace. Rest in peace and know that we carry on the tradition in yours and all our other fallen brothers honor.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Micah did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Micah be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Brown's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his family. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Micah is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Micah was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

Another sad and tragic day for law enforcement. Your death diminshes
us all. Thank you for your selfless service and sacrifice. It is a
long road to healing that lies ahead, but I know that our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ will extend His mercy and comfort to all who reach out to
Him. There is none greater than He. We don't get to Heaven based on
what we do, but what He did for us!! AMEN! There is now a huge void
that cannot be filled. God be with all those who mourn and may His
promises lift all those with heavy hearts for many years to come.
