Reflections for Police Officer Daniel Matthew Starks

Hey Dude!

Whats up? Was thinking about you this last week and how much you meant to me. I took a train ride and had a stop over in Washington D.C., and it happened to land on the National Police Week festivities up there. It was pretty awesome that you were remembered up there and I met so many other officers that have made the trip as well. You were an awesome guy and we will never forget you. Thanks Dan and also, my book is out and you are the dedication of my book...page 3 and also page 11...just another way to remember you.

All of my hugs and keep us safe!

my son....

we just returned from tallahassee. what a good trip for us it was. i still cried for you many times but it wasnt as painful as i thought. i could see you in every officer there. your friends joined us, pete (my personal hero), kirk, and "dick". it was wonderful to spend time with them. i miss you every day, but i feel you with me. i cant wait to see you again in heaven.
dont get into too much trouble up there, and keep an eye on us - we still need you!

all my love forever

Hey buddy, it's hard to believe that it has been so long since you left us. I miss you so much man. I drive around so many nights and see things that make me think of you. I often catch my self looking at the clock and the time being 3:11. I know your watching over me, I miss you Dan.

The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Lee County Thanks You For Your Service

Deputy
Lee County SO

August 22, 2007

Dan,

It has been almost 4 years since you were taken from us. And everyone still bears the pain knowing you are no longer on this earth, doing what you loved best, serving the public. I miss our days together at Bayshore. All the fun we all had, the occassional pranks, and good natured laughter so common in a firehouse. It's comforting to know, you are in heaven now, watching over us. We've all moved on in life, but no one has forgotten. Your love for others, and your dedication to your duty will inspire and move us the rest of our days. Godspeed #311
