Officer Starks,

Sir, I feel only a deep sense of respect as I sit here. It is amazing that someone so young could have such a deep sense of charity. God only asks that we serve each other and treat them as you would like to be treated. The promise being something so great a human mind could not fathom it. If anyone deserves such an honor, Brother, it is you. I am humbled in your sacrafice and envied in your bravery. I pray that I will make a difference as you have. You will never be forgotten by your brothers that remain. God Bless You Sir and your Family. Thank You, form the deepest part of our souls.

Your Brothers,

Last night my wife and I went to the viewing for Daniel. It was a very moving night. There was a line over an hour long to get to the front of the church to see him, and console with the fiance and family. I have had the unpleasant occasion to go to too many of these and have over time developed the old cops "hardness" to them and can handle my emotions in most situations. As I approached the front of the church, a floral arraingment of the Ft. Myers Police badge struck me very hard. There was the number 311 on it. The number of a good friend and fellow deputy killed in a traffic accident in 1983. Last night was a very hard night. My heart goes out to the family. He was a brother, not allowed to grow.

To Officer Starks Family: How awsome it is to know that Daniel was such a special person that God took him to walk his beat in Heaven on his first night on the road by himself. That can only prove that he was truly a unique and special person. I know that you will always miss having him physically by your side, but he will always be with you in spirit and in your memories, and he will always watch over you from his new beat. May the Lord help to ease the terrible pain that you are feeling, and come to know the peace His love will bring in time.
To The Fort Myers Police Department: I understand the unbearable shock and pain you are feeling at this time. It is inconceivable to think that one who walked among you will not be there in person on your next shift. Daniel will be walking his new beat and will watch over the entire law enforcement community as their newest guardian angel.

God Bless you Officer Starks

I had the opportunity to meet Dan while I was an Explorer for the Venice Police Explorers. Defining him as a great guy would definitely be an understatement. There is no question in my mind that he will be missed by everyone in the field of Emergency Services. For those of you who did not have the opportunity to meet him, trust me, from the few meetings him and I had, he was one to serve us proud!

To his family:

This event is both tragic and unfortunate! You brought life to an amazing person, who for the short time he was here, made an awesome impression in the lives of those he encountered. The thoughts and prayers of myself and everyone I can speak for are with you! If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to contact me
God bless,

Nick

O Lord, Jesus Christ, we ask your mercy for Police Officer Daniel Starks, whom you have called from this life. You promised that whoever believes in you, even if he dies, will have life everlasting. May this sacred promise comfort us in our sadness, and bring the soul of your servant departed to the fullness of the reward you have for us after this short life. O Savior of the world, reassure us in our belief that death is not the end of life, but rather the door through which we enter your kingdom of perfect joy in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Daniel did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Daniel be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Starks' family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his family. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Daniel is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Daniel was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!
