Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Kevin Michael Sherwood

To Kevin's family & Co-Workers:
I met Kevin at the MSP Precision Driving Insructor School a few years back. It was a small intimate class. We all got to know each other well over the two weeks. Kevin would sit there in the class while everyone made feeble attempts at humor. When the moment was right he would rattle off a one liner that would leave us on the floor!

When I heard of this tragedy I immediately thought of the two weeks we spent together. I grieved for your loss because it has been a loss for all of us. Our prayers are with you.

Kevin is with God now watching over all of us in our daily tasks.

Can you see each day how much I miss you? It has been a little over two months. It doesnt seem to get any easier.

Do you know the pain I feel in my heart?

You were taken while you were doing what you loved…something of which a mom has no part.
The little boy I gave birth to became a hero, and my heart swells with pride, a pride as great as the feeling of loss.

I see your face in the face of your beautiful little girls…I see the pain of your loss each time I look into Katy’s eyes, and into the mirror. I see how your brother misses you, and grandma.
We all have to smile, though, as we think of the way you did your job, 150%. And you went out in a way that would have been of your choosing….perhaps saving lives…..the fly over….the uniforms….all the patrol cars….and your family and friends sharing their pain. You made the news, and the front page of the newspapers. You set a standard for law enforcement. You were the best, my little Cubby. Just look at these reflections.

I bet Grandpa Bill and you are having a great time….I know he met you and took you home. I find comfort in that. God willing, I will see you when my turn comes, and you both meet me.

I talk to you every day. I hope you hear me, and can help dry my tears.

I did not know Kevin but I was raised in Clare County. I too have lost fellow officers, in 2002 I carried 2 of my best friends. I pray for your family. I am sorry for your loss. Law enforcement is a thankless job, it takes a special type of person he will be missed.

It has been nearly seven years since I last worked with Kevin; however, I can still vividly recall his first days at the department as a new officer. Everything about him shined of professionalism, enthusiasm and a sincere passion for law enforcement. He was always there when any of his fellow officers needed backup, and he was the first one to lend a helping hand--truly a quality officer, but even more so, a quality human being and friend.

I remember our early days on the road as new officers when we would have a moment to chat and exchange thoughts about our life goals, aspirations and dreams. Looking back over the past 9 years, many of the dreams that Kevin shared indeed came true: a wonderful wife, three beautiful daughters, good friends and community that truly appreciated him. For his family and all of those that made his dreams come true, my most heartfelt sympathy to you for such a tragic loss. One cannot hope to find sufficient words to fill such a deep void. However, I pray that you find the solace and strength to move forward, and somehow again find happiness, so that perhaps the most important of Kevin’s dreams can remain complete.

God bless you Kevin, and may many of the things you wished for in life still come true.

A past bother and forever a friend,

To Kevins family. I did not know this courageous officer, but I appreciate what he stood for, and the job he did. I feel the pain that your family feels, I hurt for you. We lost our 21 year old son in a traffic accident in 1981 and with Gods help and that of family and friends we made it through the lonliness. I just want to share a thought that helped me. " He is only a memory away." Those memories sustain us day after day. I will keep all of you in my prayers . May God Bless you, but then he allready did, he gave you Kevin. I had the pleasure of knowing, working with and calling Kevin a friend for the last 9 years. Kevin was an exceptional officer who always seemed to have the right answer to any given question. It was comforting to know that Kevin was your back up because he was the ultimate professional in every sense of the word. The citizens of Clare Co. have lost one of the truly great ones. But those of us who had the privilege of knowing Kevin are better for it. In the aftermath of this tragedy I read in the newspaper that Kevin was a hero that night for preventing the other vehicle from hitting any other vehicles. I agree that Kevin is a hero but not for the actions of that night. Kevin was a hero for the way he lived every day of his life and his desire to help others and improve his community.
God Bless you Kevin, my thoughts and prayers will be with you, Katy and the girls. I will miss you my friend.

Lord, I ask for courage
Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go
And please, Lord,
through it all, be at my side.

Kevin, I ask that you be at all your brothers and sisters side. You are still able to watch over us, and keep us safe. It hurts that you are gone. I will never forget 10-09-03. You are a great police officer, and always will be. Just because you have been taken from us, unfairly, I know you will always give us the courage to go where others will not go, the courage to do what others will not do.

Kevin will be missied but not forgotten

To Katy
I did not know your Kevin but after reading these postings I wish I had because he sounds like he was a wonderful friend, father and husband. I can't imagine the difficult days you have ahead of you. May you find the courage through your girls to get through each day. I know that John Wilson has been a great strength to you through these difficult times. He is one of the best friends that you could have and he will always be there when you call on him. I believe that God takes people untimely for special reasons. Maybe someday you will know the special reason that he took your Kevin. He sounds like he was an angel on earth so his halo must really be glowing in heaven. May you have strength and peace.

I met Kevin a little over two years ago at the MSP Driving Instructor Academy. My sincere condolences to his wife, daughters and fellow officers in this tragic loss. I can still picture him driving in one of the cruisers at the academy, wearing the helmets that made all of us look like "Kazoo" on the Flintstones.

Kevin was a skinny little kid just around the corner in the neighborhood, growing up with my kids, mainly Kelley which was the same age. He was a good boy that was always welcomed into my home. Kevin went salmon fishing, hunting and even splitting firewood with Kelley and I. He was my 3rd son so to speak at that time. My family and I were devistated to hear of Kevin's untimely passing. Kevin, although it has been several years since we last talked, you will never be forgotten, as I thumb through my fishing book I see pictures of you and Kelley holding those big old salmon. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your Katy, the girls, your siblings as they protect our country and your mom and dad.
