To Mariam and the girls;
I didn't know Jim, and I don't know you, but we are all a family and I have felt your loss deeply. I have been praying for all of you and I hope that your days get easier with time. He sounds like a wonderful husband and father and I am sad that I didn't have the chance to know him. I will continue to pray for your recovery and I wish you all the very best.

It is difficult to write down, how I feel knowing that a fellow Law Enforment Officer lost his life doing his job. As your cousin, knowing how proud I was that you chose the profession that my Father, Brother and I chose and love. Jimmy I will miss you, we are linked together not only by blood but by a brotherhood. Jimmy you're in God's hands now, but I just want to say thanks for being a wonderful cousin and great Law Enforcement Officer. Your Cousin Rob

Jim Slater was my friend and co-worker. I have met few men as fine and honorable as he. As I learned about him, I was pleased to see how deeply he loved his wife and daughters, how he cared for the men and women he worked with in the field, and how much of himself he gave to the citizens of Spokane County. He was a man you could count on to handle the calls for service, no matter if routine or critical, they were given the same professional treatment.

He let those who worked with him know they were valued as co-workers, team members, and human beings. That means a lot when you do the jobs we do.

Every morning when I logged on to the computer Jim would send me a good morning, a comment or word picture designed to start my shift with a smile. I think that was more for the benefit of the dayshift field units than for me...a smiling radio operator is easier to work with, a thing we all know. I will miss Jim, and the morning smile he sent me.

Jim is absent from rollcall, and from the markup, but not from our hearts. He was a teacher for all of us. He made me see just how important each man and woman out there is, and how much I care for them all. Brothers and sisters in service to the citizens of Spokane County, city, and Wa. state, law enforcement officers and fire fighters alike.

I know that I am a better person for having known him, and that he impacted every person he touched. What greater thing can you say about someone than that they made a difference.

Last weekend, Jim's body was transported from one hospital to another. For all intensive purposes, Law Enforcement in Spokane County was focused on one event: to give him the proper escort he deserved. The dozens and dozens of police cars lit up, the officers blocking every intersection at salute as he passed, and the scores of people lining the street was such an incredible sight. It is something I will never forget. A fallen warrior and brother, a protector of good was honored.
After listening to the stories about him from his family and friends, I had two thoughts: I wished I knew him better and, perhaps even more significantly, that the way he lived his life has inspired me to be a better person. Thank you, Jim.

"Brave admiral, say but one good
word:
What shall we do when hope is
gone?"
The words leapt like a leaping
sword:
"Sail on! sail on! and on!"

Mariam, daughters & family:
I know no words that are adequate, at this time, with the loss that you are all feeling.

I hold you all in my thoughts and prayers that you, your family, friends and Jim's coworkers will find comfort. All of you have paid the ultimate price.

I feel very honored to have gotten to know you just a little bit during your hours of need, for I now know a little about Jim. What a truly wonderful man he is. He will never be forgotten.

We have another star in our heaven this day. May peace be with you.
