Jim,

While attending the Police Academy with you I was touched by your inspiration, leadership and life experiences. Not only are you a brother, but also a father figure that I have looked up to. You have made the ultimate sacrifice. You have dedictaed your life to your country and your community and it will not be forgotten!

My heart and deepest sympathy goes out to your family, friends, and co-workers.

While I realize that this page is not for family greivances, as his cousin I also greive for Jimmy Joe, or Bimbo as he was called the whole time we were growing up, as a fellow Law Enforcement officer.

Jimmy, as children we used to play as police officers, and both of us have followed our dreams into reality. You will be missed by all of us, and you will not be forgotten, not just as a Law Enforcement Officer, but also as a friend. GO WITH GOD Bimbo, while I know that I always teased you about your choice to make your first career as a Marine, I was always VERY PROUD of you.

Thank you for following your dreams and unlike some in our profession, I know that your true ambition as a Law Enforcement Officer was to help your fellow man.

Despite my joking comments to the contrary, Bimbo, I would have followed you anywhere, you were a true leader, and the Spokane County Sheriff's Department, and Law Enforcement in general, has suffered a great loss.

I LOVE AND MISS YOU and I will see you in heaven

To the family, friends, and co-workers of Deputy Slater,
It is so hard to see another name added just 2 days after we lost 3 in one day!! I check this website daily with a prayer that a new name will not be added. My heart breaks each time I see a new one added to the list of so many heros who have gone before. I hurt knowing how much pain you are feeling, I have been there. There are no words that I can say to ease your pain, but please remember that you are all on my mind and in my prayers. God will take your broken hearts and hold them in His gentle, loving hands and comfort you, just lean on Him!!
Another angel got his wings. Thank you Deputy Slater for your unselfish sacrafice. God only takes the BEST!!!!
I wish you PEACE!!

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Tonight, August 30, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Deputy James Joseph Slater who died in the line of duty just yesterday.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Deputy Slater's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

"Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tear,
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."
