Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Andrew John Mazur

I was in the Academy with John. He was not in my squad, but I spoke to him often. He was quiet, polite, friendly, and a fellow believer. I had a bond with him from our first chat. He was one who would always smile, and I dno't think I ever heard him complain about our training conditions. I had just gotten back from serving in the Air Force after reserve call up following 9-11. I finished my FTO program finally and had just completed my first month on my own. I hear that a fellow offiecr had been killed in Greenville. We had quite a few from that area in my class, and sought out the newspaper to find out who it was. I was heart broken to find out it was John. What a terrible loss. I made a point to come to the funeral between two 8 hr midnight shifts, riding with another deputy so i could get some sleep. How sad the funeral was. It was my first police funeral... I suppose it wont be my last. You are missed, John.

Drew, I think of you often. I remember the nights we had to sell Buck A Cup buttons together. I can't believe that it has been 4 years since you left. You still had so much life left. I know I didn't spend as much time with you as the other guys on our shift but your death has had such an impact on me. I'm no longer with GCSO but I remember how much you enjoyed it. Miss you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Drew,
I think of you often and will never forget the times we shared on Delta platoon. I am currently serving as an international police advisor in Afghanistan. I remember how you bravely served and use that as a guideline for how I wish to serve my country.
Miss You Brother,

It has been almost four years since that Sunday afternoon and when I reflect on the events of that day they are just as clear now as they were then. So many times before we have sat on the side of the road waiting for you to make it safe for us. You always looked out for us and never complained no matter how trivial or frequent our need. Just as so many others that Sunday afternoon you forever changed my life. It made me remember how important you and your duty are, not only to us, but to our way of life. I hope your family understands what an impact you continue to make in so many ways. I share your story and hopefully a small piece of your legacy with everyone who will listen. May God Bless all those who miss you every single day.

Every time I think about you, I see your smile. After this happened the first thing that came to my mind was that I knew without a shadow of a doubt that your spirit was with the father himself. You had an impact on every life that you encountered and you will forever live on and will never be forgotten.
