Reflections for Officer Patrick Martin Maher

My heart breaks over the loss of Patrick. Everytime I hear of another law officer being killed in the line of duty, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and fellow officers. My son is a deputy with the local sheriff's department and I fear for his life as well. But he, like Patrick, is doing the job he loves. Please know, so many hearts go out to you at this very difficult time. May God give you strength. I know Patrick will live in our memories forever. May God Bless and protect each of you.
Diane Jensen

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free,
I am following the path GOD laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh…to love…to work…to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
For I found peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
These things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with time of sorrow,
For I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undo grief.
So lift up your heart and share with me,
GOD wanted me now...He has set me free.

Remember...to live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die

Pat and I were "beat partners" in Waikiki for several years. One could not ask for a better person as "back up". Hard working, conscientious and morally strong. Pat also had a lighter side that would keep people laughing throughout a long shift. I , along with many members of his"Ohana" will make the trip to Washington to pay tribute to him and his scarifice this Thurs. He truly made the world a better place to be. God bless you brother and your family. Until we meet again. Aloha C660!

Hi guys, it's Renee, Patrick's wife.

You know, Patrick would have been embarassed by all this. He didn't want acknowledgement, he didn't need applause. He loved his job, he loved serving others, he loved helping those in need. We all know that was the TRUE Patrick. He loved all of you so much: Tanodra, Sumo, Sgt. Bernal, all the guys on his watch there in Waikiki. I've heard all of the stories - he loved telling them. His eyes would light up and he would get so animated. His passion was just one of the many reasons that I fell in love with him.

I have asked myself over and over how to best honor this wonderful man. He was my best friend and the best dad my son ever had. He loved family and friends, and you guys. He talked about his times in the Coast Guard with such pride and he was proud to serve his country. But reading these Reflections, seeing so many names of people I knew and even those I know only through Patrick's stories, gives me so much comfort. And I know these stories, these heartfelt memories, are the best way to honor Patrick. That's how he'd want it.

Please guys, stay in touch!

Renee Maher, Patrick's wife

To the Maher Family and the Federal Way Police Department:

I would like to offer my condolences to your families in the loss of your husband, father and friend. There are not the right words to say but to only have you know that you are not alone in your loss. We will remember him and will always be a reminder to us to always be vigilant. He seemed like such a nice man. A friend I might have had. He is with the Angels now. He is safe, at peace. May you find the same.

Hey 660,

I know you’re up there smiling down from heaven with that big sheepish grin across your face wondering what all the fuss is about. Well you should realize by now the scope and magnitude of how you have touched so many of us. When I called the old watch, everybody was dumbfounded. Dac, Paul, John, Hollywood, Brett, Kimo, Mad Dog, Mats and Gunny- everybody is still numb with disbelief.

I have always felt lucky to be assigned to the sector and you were a big part of that. You imparted your knowledge, experience and work ethic to all of us rookies in your unassuming way. I have been vividly recalling covering each other off, countless talks before we 10-08, getting coffee at 407, shooting the breeze at the Shell lot, transporting your numerous 210’s and 160’s, watch parties and breakfast at Denny’s. (Remember our “Keystone Cops” plain clothes cases on Kuhio and at the Sheraton aquarium?) By the way, I really was planning on taking you up on a Seahawks game- unless it was against our Raiders.

You somehow remained stoic and upbeat about your job even though the judicial system would often make your hard work all for naught. I want you to know I was so surprised and incredibly honored when you asked me to be a reference for you. I was disappointed to see you go but knew you had broader horizons ahead and that Federal Way would be a better place with you there. I will take your memory with me into line-up every day.

Well Indiana Jones, your recall was made 08-02-03. Make 10-09, 10-01 with the knowledge that you will be fondly remembered by all the Blue Ohana.

Thanks for showing me the way when I was wrong. You were never over bearing, never under caring, and always there for your beat, your beat partners, and your department. I learned to look up to you and respect you throughout the years. Go easy now, hero. Go, easy. I will see you one last time on Thursday. GOD BLESS.

Im sorry our time of getting to know each other was cut short. In passing between shifts I did get to experience your professionalism and politeness. I allways new when you asked to use my assigned car that it would be returned clean, gassed up and just how I had left it. Your respect of others was very apparent. The last time we spoke I realized you were someone I would like to get to know better. Know after hearing stories from your friends I know I would have enjoyed getting to know you better.

Thanks Pat for your ultimate selfless act.

Rest easy, brother. The Lord needed a special warrior that ill fated day. May your family and frirnds know that you are a hero, now and forever. Not to be forgotten.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Patrick did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Patrick be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Maher's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Patrick is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Patrick was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!
