God Bless you Doug and Family, I had the pleasure of knowing you when I operated a convieince store on the southside for about 7 yrs. I met you when you came out of the academy. I want to tell you again how much I appreciated your dedication to your job and in keeping me and my staff safe in a rough part of Richmond. My wife and I salute you and God Bless you and your Family. You will be missed, rest in peace.

I AM VERY SORRY TO HERE ABOUT THE LOST OF ONE OF OUR PROTECTORS. IT MAKE ME SAID TO HEAR OF ONE OF OUR COURAGEOUS POLICE OFFICER LEAVING US IN SUCH A WAY. I WISH TO LET THE FAMILY KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT HERE WHO CARE. AND TO SAY THANK YOU FOR SHARING HIM WITH US.

I send my condolences to Officer Wendel's family and collegues. I don't think a lot of the public realize how underappreciated these officers are as they put their lives on the line for the citizens every day. This is such a tragedy. How tragic that there are people that have such little regard for human life. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved Officer Wendel

We at Lotsey and Hardy had the opportunity to meet Officer
Wendell, and he seem to us to be a very straight forward
and caring police officer , and was proud of what he was
doing in the community he served. He will be surely missed
and our condolenses goes out to his family especially his
children, they can be proud to know he died trying to rid
our small part of the world of so much that we see that is
surrounding us. Our prayers and deepest sympathy goes out
to you all and also to your family in law enforcement......

It is with my deepest and sincerest heartfelt sympathy that I leave this message for the family of Officer Wendel.
I thank his wife and children for sharing him with a society that is all to often unpredictable and unsafe.
Unselfishly, he served. As a hero, he'll be remembered.
My prayers are with you during this time of sorrow.

Rev. Patricia (Terry) Humphrey
Retired Henrico Co. Deputy

Back in the day, that was second precinct, 214/234......My mentor worked that neighborhood and taught me so much about policing. My mentor liked to call south Richmond, "the ancient city of Manchester," for it's original name before it was annexed.

Well today, I am sure that the citizens of Manchester, and all of Richond mourn this tragic loss. I too have a heavy heart.

To Doug Wendel's family, I pray that God will comfort you and that you will have his peace.

To the members of the Richmond Police, thank you for your service. I certainly appreciate all of the sacrifice that is made, and I certainly will never forget Doug Wendel.

To the Wendell Family.

Your family and Doug are in my prayers, I have been employed with the Police Department since Dec 1995. I will never forget this past Saturday evening as I was working the Information Desk and Doug called in for a Record's check and stated he was in the vehicle by himself and could not come in and get the record check. I filled out the paper work and when he drove up outside, I had the honor of taking the paperwork to him and spoke a little with him. Doug was always very proffessional and very courteous at all times. He will not be forgotten and again my symapthy and prayers go out to you in this time of sorrow.

I will never forget that evening and I will keep your family and Doug in my prayers. If there is anything that I can do or help with please let me know.

God Bless and the Peace of the Lord be with you.
God speed Doug.

Police Officers Prayer,
Strengthen me today, dear Lord, and help me keep in mind the laws that you created for the work that you designed.
May I stand for justice so one day crime may cease, and let me serve all people so they may live in peace.

Dear Officer Wendel,

I did not know you, but I did. I created a 9/11 Tribute page on my web site. It is in memory of someone I knew who died, and it is in Honor and Memory of our local heroes. So now, it is in Memory of you also. I have pictures of our local police and fire fighters on it.

My 9/11 Tribute page will never go away so you will not be forgotten, and you will always be a hero in my mind.

I knew Doug Wendell during his years of service in the Manchester section of our City, South of the James. He was as dedicated to protecting the citizens as he was to helping those seeking his help or advise. He performed his dutywell to catch and jail those lawless individuals who prey upon our public for thrill or monetary gain. He will be sorely missed by the Police Dept. His co-workers, friends, his family and loved ones May he rest in peace and to know that he didn't die in vain by the swift capture of his executioner through the help of the citizens of the city he tried to protect during his short career.
