Reflections for Police Officer Douglas Edward Wendel

Twenty years gone. Remembering the good times we shared growing up in the neighborhood, working together before his move to Virginia, being each other’s “Best Men”. Miss you Doug.

Hey Douglas - my great friend from when we were little kids. I heard about your passing a few years ago and just wanted to let you know that I think of you often. I tried to model my kids' upbringing similar to ours - let 'em have fun, let 'em now that they're loved, let 'em know the value of family and friends. You, me and David G. hanging out every day of the week - those were the best of times. I'll see you again one day - we'll pick up where we left off - play a little baseball, ride our bikes, lie on our backs and identify animals out of the clouds...

Officer Wendel - This past week I had the honor of completing the 285 mile Law Enforcement United bike ride with your daughter, Brigitte. She did an amazing job and toughes out the cold, rain and hills...so many hills... you would have been so proud of her. I know you were with her and the rest of us, watching over us and keeping us safe. You are never forgotten-God Bless.

Time passes, Doug, but the memories remain. For those left behind, life moves on, seasons change, but the love and the loyalty remain the same. Know that you are not forgotten, will never be, and know that we are forever grateful for your continued watch. The love shared will never fade, no matter the length of years. Rest, both well and in Peace. God Bless.

Officer Wendell,

Today I attended the Richmond Police Department Memorial Service for Officers that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our city and our community. My grand father J. Harvey Burke gave his life in service in 1925 and I was there today to honor and remember his service While at today's service I had the pleasure of meeting your wife and daughter. They are both beautiful ladies and I could tell they miss and honor you tremendously.

Thank you for your service and may God always watch over you and your family. R.I.P.
