Upon hearing of your death, my heart broke and my spirit cried," OH GOD, NOT ROD". Disbelief and tears in the days following. And now a peaceful yet extreme sadness has come to me knowing that you made such a positive impact on everyone that you touched in your live. You were where you wanted to be, doing what you were trained to do and loving the life that God had given to you, and then unbelievely being called upon to make the "ultimate sacrifice". The most difficult part is believeing that this had to happen at all. Anger, of course, that your killer was such a worthless piece of humanity.
How lucky I was to know you as you were just beginning your enforcement career at the Good Old Days as a bouncer. You loved the activity, excitement and responsibility of controling the college crowd. All the young men working with you from bartenders to fellow bouncers all looked up to you as a mentor. They admired your responsibility, loyalty, and commitment to doing the right thing . Several of those young men went on to become police officers because you set such a great example. You lived a Hero's live, and you died a Hero's death. Such an impact on so many people in such a short lifespan is truly remarkable, and at only 25 yrs. old.
As a mother, no one could wish for a finer son.
As your employer, I hit the jackpot. Your the best I ever had.
As a friend, I'm honored and thankful that I could share a
portion of your life.

My heart breaks for Maria and Carson that they must live their lives without your love, laughter, smile, and devotion. My prayers and thoughts will be with them always.

YOU ARE A GREAT YOUNG MAN AND I WILL MISS YOU.
I'll never forget you. You are as close to perfect a young man as I will ever meet. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MY HERO.

In this day and time that so much attention has been given to the US military. I want to say that the officers who protect and serve us here at home are truly my heroes. Officer Pocceschi, you gave your life so that we could live an America safer from criminals who would do us harm. May God bless and protect those who continue to do the job you did so well.

Maria and Carson, our prayers go out to you and know that your husband died with the glory that is reserved for heroes and not in vain.

I am honored to say that I concidered Rod a friend. When I first moved to Va. Beach and met Rod he help me settle in and feel at home. My wife and his were pregnant at the same time and we had many a conversation about becomming fathers fo the first time. When my baby was born I think Rod was as excited as I was, but as soon as Carson came along just a few months later you could see the true glow in his face. Rod loved his family more than life it self, he showed us pictures, bragged, and enjoyed every moment. Rod was a GREAT man and I will miss him terribly.

Maria and Carson: Please go through life knowing that Rod was a hero, he made the streets safer and the world a better place.Rod touched the lives of many and helped whomever he came in contact with. GOD BE WITH YOU.

Rod, I had the pleasure of serving with you a short time at the 4th Pct just before my retirement in Nov 2001. It was an honor to work with you and your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Thank God for your service and you and your family will never be forgotten.

Lieutenant (Ret) Jimmy Newby
VBPD Retired

As a Probationary Police Officer, Rod's Virginia DCJS certification was my first.

Due to Y2K concerns, we spent New Year's Eve of 1999 into 2000 on an extended shift. It was a spectaculary uneventful night. I have one vivid recollection. We had a wonderful discussion about the pros and cons of various manufacturers of lip protection balms. Rod was passionate in his dislike for my favorite brand. I knew at the moment that Rod would make it through the PPO phase. How could he not make it! I saw in that discussion his conviction to his beliefs. He wouldn't be derailed from his pursuit of those beliefs. He wouldn't be stopped from becoming an excellent example of a police officer.

I saw Rod on the Friday night before his death. I was on duty and patrolling my area. We had a very brief exchange behind Primo's Pizza restaurant at the Kempsville Marketplace shopping center. I joked him about blocking the rear fire lane with his personal vehicle. He kidded me about how obsessive I was in checking all the nooks and crannies in my patrol area. And as always, he was helping someone. He was delivering his personal barbecue grill to the restaurant owner for his use in a catering event. I will always remember from that briefest of encounters his smile, his laugh, his kindness, and his thoughfulness.

You taught me much. I will miss you.

With much love,

Jeff

My dear friend, I miss you so much. I always looked forward to your
encouragement. There were days you helped me get thru and I will
always be grateful for that. Not to mention the kick I got out of giving
you a hard time. Just know that you will always be Superman in my
eyes. You were a hero when I met you and you died a hero. There is
no other like you and no one that can compare to you. I'm proud to
have been able to call you friend. And proud to have been your
dispatcher, We will think of you often. Love, B

Carson, You are such a loved little boy. Your daddy was so proud of
you. He loved you so much and he's watching every move you make.
So just know that he will always be there, every step you take,
especially the first, and everything you do he will be watching and
cheering for you. I know you will grow into a smart and handsome man
just like him.

Maria, My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I
know it's got to be difficult. But at least you know that Rod hit his target
that night and saved others in the process. What a loving and sweet
husband he must have been. Stay strong.
