Reflections for Undersheriff Matthew John Lane

DEAR MATTIE,
I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH YOU ARE GOING TO MISSED. YOU DID YOUR JOB WELL. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR AND HOW YOU ALWAYS HELPED WITHOUT WONDERING WHAT YOU WOULD GET OUT OF IT. MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOUR WIFE AND THE GIRLS. YOU COULDN'T HAVE BEEN A BETTER BROTHER. I'LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE...GOD WILLING I LOVE YOU!

Matt -

We didn't get to be with you very often, but the times we were around you, you made an impression: Your devotion to your family, your job, your country, and your God will be an inspiration all you came in contact with and help them to realize that you did not live nor die in vain.

Iwas really looking forward to spending some quality time with you in the next couple of months but now I will have to wait a while to join you in God's presence. I love you, son - Jim

"Friends in Blue"

We have worked together for many years,
It's our voices ringing in your ears.
We try to make those long days brighter,
And hopefully, the load a little lighter.

We send you to the bar-room brawl.
And out in the rain to the nuisance call.
We worry about you day and night.
To make sure every call turns out all right.

We share your sorrows, we share your joys,
That's why we think of you as ... "Our boys."
Then why have we never said to you,
"I'm proud of you ... my friend in blue."

I met Matt about 10 years ago when he was an Explorer Advisor. I will always remember Matt as a very funny man who has made a difference in the hearts and minds of many. He will be missed.

Matt,

It was an honor and priviledge to have worked with you. I appreciate your guidance, sense of humor and professionalism. It would have been great to have worked another six years with you. We recently took a road trip to the west side to pick up some used office furniture for the addition to the office and I can tell you what salad dressing he would pick and how hot he wanted his latte'. We were at times a dysfunctional family but a family just the same.

You mentioned that the sheriff had recently said he was glad you were his undersheriff. I didn't say it then but I feel the same way. Thanks for being a colleague and a friend.

May you have fair winds and a following sea.

May God grant your family a comforting peace as you transcend this earthly bound. I have no doubt that God will meet you with open arms as you go forth to patrol the streets of heaven under his command. May God bless you, your family, friends, and all of the remaining peace officers who will continue the watch here in your absence.

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS.
HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS.
"STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU?
HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t.
Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep,
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, though sometimes I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears.
I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here,
they never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

It's not about the glory - there is none.
It's not about the fame - there is none.
It's not about the money - there isn't much.

It's about giving one's all for the job - you did.

Rest in peace, Matt. To those of us who knew you, you are a hero.

To the family, friends, & co-workers of Undersheriff Matt Lane & ESAR Pilot Rudy Ohlund:

Although we did not have the pleasure of knowing you both as well as others did, your reputations as being well respected professionals in the law enforcement community are well known. Your willingness to help others at a moments notice regardless of possible risks to yourselves is appreciated by all in the law enforcement and civilian communities.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to everyone who knew Matt and Rudy. We pray that they find peace and understanding knowing that they made the ultimate sacrifice trying to help their fellow man.

Goodbye brothers you will not be forgotten.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers who worked with Undersheriff Lane.

While we may all wear different uniforms and serve in different jurisdictions, we are all united in other sworn duties to uphold the law and protect the public.

Rest in peace my friend, let those of us who remain cover your post on the thin blue line until we meet again.
