It truly is tragic. But nonetheless, no matter how it happens, he is still a hero in our book.

I reflect, and remember:
When one hurts, we all hurt, what a tragic way to lose a young officer:
All gave some
And some gave all
Some stood through
For the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties
And recall
Some gave all. (unknown writer)

I find myself at times poring over Bible verses I have learned since childhood trying to make them real in today's world, and in such a tragic, seemingly senseless, accident, may you find some comfort in God's promise in Romans, chapter 8, verse 28 as you, the family, friends and coworkers of Cole mourn his loss....

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose."

Sadly, the promise is not that all things are good....
Be there for each other...the nation mourns with you.

To the Family of Officer Cole Martin:
We would like to extend to you our deepest sympathy in the loss of your son. There are no words that we can say to ease your pain, but know that we are there in spirit with you and hold you up in prayer.
The loss is more than words can say. People will ask you in the coming months, "How are you doing?" and you will say "OK", because there are no other words to explain how you feel.
The emptiness will always be there and you will think of him every day, every minute of the day. At first your thoughts will be painful, but as the months go on, your thoughts of him will become easier and you will start thinking of his smile and the good times you had as a family. Life will never be the same for you, but know there are many of us who are thinking of you, who have walked the path you are now walking. You will never be alone, even though we may never meet, know that you are in our hearts.
We know that he was dedicated to his Duty and his Community and he was doing what he loved best, protecting those who he loved and his community.
Be proud of him, he gave everything he had to give. His Life.
God bless you and keep you in His care.
