As a former Bergen County resident, I am especially hurt by this tragedy. I made sure that the cops in San Diego knew that Mary Ann was truly a hero. I'm sure she will be missed by her family and peers.

I did not know Mary Ann Collura,
but I know what she stood for
on the night of April 17, 2003.

Those of us that walk this beat have
lived the scenario that ended her life;
How many times?
Without the tragic ending.

We know the meaning of the old refrain....
"There,
but for the Grace of God,
Go I."

We thank you Mary Ann for your sacrifice and
your dedication, and we thank you for responding when
you heard the call of a fellow Officer.

We also heard the call.... "Officer down."
And we came; 10,000 of us came,
to show that you did not fall alone.

What you started we finished. So that our unity will serve both as an example and a warning... to those that would doubt our resolve.

You, your family, and co-workers are in our prayers.

Sgt. C. A. Mos

I salute you my fallen sister. My heart goes out to your friends, family and co-workers.

My deepest condolences and sorrow for the loss of Officer Collura. It saddens me that a person who blazed a trail for other female officers would receive such a fate. I work with female officers on every shift and have not previously considered the anguish to follow if one of them was lost. Again, I am sorry for Officer Collura's death. A very brave woman, an officer, and hopefully in my afterlife, a friend.

After growing up in Bergenfield, only a short distance down the road from Fair Lawn, it is very hard for me to see a fellow officer die in the line of duty so close to home. My thoughts and prayers are with the Collura Family at this very difficult time.
