I am saddened by the loss of your husband, father, and best friend. John, know that Jesus will give you strength to get through this ordeal and know that one day you will see your father again. Keep on in your faith and sharing the love of Christ with others. Although I no longer work with you, you know you are near to my heart and in my prayers.

To all the Police Officers, Deputy Sheriff's, and all other Law Enforcement officers who have died or will die in service of this great nation, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to you for keeping me and my family safe at night. I would also like to thank Lt. Hicks for giving his life in the defense of this country. Not many words can express what I feel when I read about another Police Officer that has been killed in the line of duty. I only hope that one day I can repay you for your "ultimate sacrifice." Be it known that there are people in this country that appreciate the work you all do for us. I am one of those and will always be. Thank you very much for protecting me. May God be with all of you!!!

To the family, friends and officers with the Avery County Sheriff's Office, I offer my deepest sympathy in the loss of Deputy Hicks. Please know that officers throughout the state are grieving, and we are keeping all of you in our prayers.

To the family of Lt. Hicks,
When I heard that a deputy in Avery County had been killed and another shot, I felt so sick. Not because I knew him but because I know the pain that you will be going through. You see I had been married to Trooper Calvin Taylor who was the last officer killed in the line of duty in western N.C. (or that I am aware of). Know that there are many of us out here who are praying for you and will help you in any way. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around you and help you make it through each day...that is the only way I made it. There will be days that you won't want to do anything and that's okay. Everyone deals with their loss differently and in their own time. Just do whatever makes it possible for you to make it through each day. Just try to be there for each other. My heart breaks for you and I will be praying for you.

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

This is a very hard path to walk, but there are others walking with you. We have been down this path and are still walking it. While no words will ever be enough, try to gain strength in Lt. Hicks' memories for they will serve as a constant source from which you can draw. Although this is an incredibly difficult time, know that he will always be with each and everyone of you.
