Reflections for Police Officer Eric Eugene DeWit

Angels in Blue
I had this friend you see, who loved
God, Country, You and me.
My friend went to work day or night
the peace to keep, so you and I could sleep.
He worked the holidays and weekends,
away from family and friends.
To keep this peace for you and me.
Each day this friend put his life on the line
to spare yours and mine.
Then one day he paid the price, he gave his life.
You've done well my friend, patrolling these earthly streets.
Now it's time to walk on Heaven's beat.
The next time you see a Police Officer or two,
remember they are one of God's Angels in Blue.
And God said; "Blessed are the Peace Makers

I just lost my brother on the 13 of last month and i miss him more everyday my prayers are with you all..

Too sad for words. I can't even imagine what you are going thru. I just pray that God will meet your needs in Christ Jesus for He is the Great Comforter and Healer. I'm sure you will always carry this young officer close to your hearts. How sad to think of all his unrealized dreams and goals in his lifetime, cut short by such a tragedy. God bless all those whose hearts are broken and heavy. Psalm 34 was always a great comfort to me in times of sorrow and fear. God never owes us an explanation, we just have to trust Him. He is faithful and worthy of our trust!

I remember when Eric and I used to play football together in our backyards with all the neighborhood kids. We went to grade school and high school together. He was a great person and he will be missed by many. The only comfort in this whole tragedy, is now we know that Eric is patrolling the streets of Heaven.

Rest in Peace and God Bless Eric!

22 years old is so young for any one to die never the less for an Officer who probably expected to retire doing this job.

My heart goes out to your family Officer DeWit, your wife, and your little baby. I'm sure your going to be missed by all of them. God Bless You.

Patrol Officer Andre Wassouf
Portsmouth NH Police

So young so tragic. For someone so new you certainly made a lasting impression on many. May the Lord ease your family's pain. Go in peace brother.

My thoughts and prayers are with Officer DeWitt's wife, infant son, family, friends and co-workers. My husband was killed this same day one year ago. People say time heals all wounds, but it never heals. It only eases it. This is so sad that this child will never know his father. My children were 4 & 6 when my husband was killed. Your children will be what keeps you going everyday, and God's grace. Your law enforcement family will always be with you. Psalm 55:22

I am so so sorry to read this entry on this site. This officer was so young, and just starting out. My heartfelt prayers go out to his young wife and son.

The only thing I can say that may offer you some comfort is that he died a hero, and God will grant you His peace and his love although it may that may be hard to contemplate now.

Greater love hath no man, than to lay down his life for his friends. Peace be with you.

I read this site daily, letting those who leave before me know that they are not forgotten. But, this is especially unnerving as your age. May your son grow into what you would have, did; a hero. Rest easy brother as we will continue for you. May God hold your family and friends in the palm of His hand at their darkest hour. Never forgotten. "Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgement that something else is more important."

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Dewit's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to his wife and son especially. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Eric is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Eric was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Today, February 18, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of P.O. Eric DeWit who died just yesterday.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer DeWit's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Sgt. Paul Bissonnette
Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Surrey, BC

My deepest sympathies to your family, friends and law enforcement family. May the LORD's Grace and Peace rest on you and them.
