Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Eric Eugene DeWit

Dearest Son,
Twenty years. Twenty years without you physically, but not one moment goes by when you"re not in our thoughts. Our memories of you are vivid. Your Dad and I were talking about how you pulled us over on Valentine's Day. We all laughed. We never imagined that would be the last time we'd see you before you left us. Our lives were forever changed. We thank God for giving you to us. We only wish he would have let you stay longer. There was so much more you wanted to do. Each year we read every reflection and thank everyone who posts. It warms our hearts. We miss you so much. One day we will be joyously reunited. We love you, Eric. ❤

Dear Son,
You would have been 43 years old today. I would say Happy Birthday, but this day is far from happy for your Dad and me since you've been gone. We are grateful and honored to be your parents, and we think of all the happy times when you were with us. One day, Son, we'll hug you again. ❤

I have never posted on this page. Most that know me would never consider me a reflective, emotional person. They just don't know. 19 years passes in a blink of an eye, except I'm sure for your loved ones. For them, it's an eternity. A son, sibling, husband and father. I still remember receiving a phone call that night. A hero has fallen. That week moved in slow motion for so many. As time passes, the sting of loss remains. But a hero remembered is never truly gone. And your memory will always live, not only with your brothers and sisters in the Matteson Police Department, but those who patrol other streets, in other communities, and see Star 212 on every Matteson Patrol Vehicle. A Place of Honor sits vacant in the Matteson Police Department Training Room, so that every person who enters will know of a hero's sacrifice.

Eric, I’m sorry I’ve never dropped you a line in over 16 years. I think of you often and pray that your wife and daughter are taken care of. My favorite memory with you in the brief time I got to work with you was when we were in that car chase in Markham on 159th by the 294 overpass and we ended up catching the dude in that wooded area in unincorporated Markham! You were so pumped and excited, heck we both were! We got the bad guy and no one got hurt. I was sad to see you go to Matteson but happy for you at the same time. I miss you brother in blue! I’m glad I had that time with you! You will never be forgotten! REST IN PEACE -GONZO-

Dear Son,
It is hard to believe we have been leaving reflections on your page for sixteen years. February 17th will always be x'd out on our calendars and engraved in our minds forever. We miss you so much and pray that there is a God so that one day we will see you again.

Happy 39th Birthday, Son! We wish you were spending your birthday here with us instead of heaven, but we thank God that you were given to us for 23 years. Your daughter, as I am sure you know, is beautiful with your personality. Please keep giving us signs you are with us in spirit. Keep our broken hearts safe until we reunite. Love you forever. ❤

Dear Son,
Fifteen years. We try to imagine what you would look like today. There are so many wonderful people who will never forget you and check in on us. Our hearts will never be whole until we meet again, but until then, keep watch from heaven. You are our angel in blue. Love and miss you even more.

Dear Son,
Today is your 38th birthday, fifteen of them without you. Your dad and I spend your day together visiting you and remembering how wonderful and funny you were. We are so glad that God gave you to us, even if it was for such a short time. We were truly blessed. Love you, sweetheart. ❤❤❤

It's been 15 years since I last saw you. I remember when you were a patrol officer for the City of Markham Police Department and I was a patrolman for the Markham Park District Police Department. You backed me up when I was dealing with some unreasonable subjects at a district field house. We hit it off instantly. You were very professional and diplomatic. I will never forget you my brother in blue! Rest easy my friend.
