NOT A PEACE OFFICER

Sheila,

I saw your picture on ODMP tonight. It saddened me to see that we had lost such a beautiful sister. From the love and respect that I have seen in the reflections that have been submitted to you and your family, I am sure that you were just as beautiful on the inside as you were on the outside. My deepest sympathy to your family. I feel their pain for I lost a nephew in the line of duty just last year. The world owes you a debt of gratitude. Because you so courageously walked the point, many others will never have to.
Remember, your sacrifice has given strength to all of us who carry on the mission . Rest well. Thank you........

I was proud to stand with your fellow officers from Norfolk and around the state and country as we paid tribute to your life of service. May your family, friends and fellow officers remember the good times and good things. We will carry on in your memory, looking to your life and that of others who have made the ultimate sacrifice for inspiration.

I REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I SAW YOU AND TALKED TO YOU, JUST 2 DAYS BEFORE YOU WERE CALLED AWAY. YOUR SMILE AND YOUR LAUGH I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER AND THE WAY IT WAS INFECTIOUS TO ALL AROUND YOU. YOU WILL BE MISSED AND NEVER FORGOTTEN MY SISTER IN BLUE. IN THOSE EARLY MORNING HOURS GOD CALLED YOU AWAY TO HIS HOUSE WHERE IT IS NEVER COLD NOR VOID OF LOVE. GOODBYE MY SISTER SHEILA, WE WILL MISS YOU.

It was with deep sadness and regret that I heard the news that fateful morning, while I was getting ready for my shift. I didn’t know you, but it’s obvious you were a special person who brought much joy to those around you, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew you. You wore the badge proudly, a true warrior dedicated to making a difference, exemplifying all that is good about being a police officer. One day we will walk Heaven’s beat together, but until then, watch over and protect us as we try to carry on your legacy. As the Police Unity Tour pedals to Washington DC in May, you will be deep in our thoughts, then and always, as we ensure that the sacrifices of our brothers and sisters who are gone will NEVER be forgotten. Strength be with the Norfolk PD – my thoughts are with them. Rest in peace Sheila, and God bless you and your family.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Herring-Patrick's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Sheila is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) Sheila was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

So sorry to hear about your loss. Norfolk P.D. has lost another fine officer. I pray that God will help you all during this tragedy. I lost someone very dear to me 5 days after James Gilbert with N.P.D. was killed. I know how hard it is and how important it is to have support. Remember to be there for each other.

Mrs. Herring,
I hope you are in heaven and doing well. While you are up there, I want you to say hi to James. Everyone misses you very much. The day you got hurt, it reminded me of the day another police officer was killed(James). We all are very sad that another policer officer has fallen. God will look after your daughter and the rest of your family. It is sad that me and my family did not get to know you and your family at all.
REST IN PEACE OFFICER SHEILA HERRING

A Norfolk police officers daughter

The Policeman stood
and faced her god,
Which must always come to pass,
She hoped her shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as her brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared her sholders
and said, "no, lordI guess I aint,
Because those of us that carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked alot of overtime,
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept many tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here,
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

So, if you've a place for me,
Lord, it needn't be so grand,
I've neither expected nor had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
where the saints had after trod,
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of her God.

"Step forward now policeman,
You've done your burdens well,
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
YOU'VE DONE YOUR TIME IN HELL !!!!!!"

May God Bless You........
