Reflections for Police Officer Joseph John McGarry

We in the Horry County Law Enforcement Community have lost yet another Brother in Blue. Officer McGarry is third officer murdered in Horry County in as many years, and in this small community each death hurts as much as the one before. The officers in this community will carry on as we always have, and carry on the legacy of Cpl. Dennis Lyden, Lt. Randy Gerald, and Ofc. Joe McGarry. They will never be forgotten.

There is no honor in taking, only giving. How do you thank someone who gave his life, so that others may live?

You are a brother in our hearts forever.
See you on the flip side bro!

Charlestown, RI Police Dept

There will never be another person who could light up a room like Joe. He was truly a good person and always looked out for his friends. It was an honor to have known him and we will all miss him.

Joe,

You will truly be missed in Myrtle Beach. I never had the chance to meet you but know you were a fine officer. Since the death of my fiance' Joey Rodgers I have become very close to alot of the MBPD officers. The guys are certainly some of South Carolina's finest law enforcement. Your death has hit me very hard being that it was the same situation has Joey's. This state hoped that we would never had to see that again. Please know there is a group out there who will be there for your family and fiance'. This group is know as COPS and they are truly remarkable. Joe, Please rest in peace and say hello to Joey. We will miss you.

The loss of Joe is not only a tragedy to his loved ones but also to his "Brothers In Blue." Joe will not be forgotten, for he loved his job and paid for it with his life. Joe gave the ultimate sacrifice, and that is one thing we all know as being police officers we may one day too give the ultimate sacrifice.
Joe watch over us as we are out their on the streets. I will miss you bro, but I no in my heart one day we will both be walking a beat on heavens streets.

Patrolman Bradley Evans
Monroe Police Dept. Monroe, NC

Joe,

Words cannot describe the way I felt when I heard you had been shot, although I did not know you I felt as if I had lost a brother. We are all family no matter where we police or what race or creed. The burden laid upon our shoulders and the sacrifice we give is great. Too great for most to bear or understand. That is why we are set apart from the crowd. We are no different than any other person, but we are treated as if we are "not like them". Joe, it is very obvious you are a man of high character and you are loved by all you came in contact. Myrtle Beach will never be the same. May God bless your family's hearts and give them peace.

As was expressed before, I also visit Myrtle Beach on my vacations or weekend trips because it is close and a "safe" place to go. Myrtle Beach is made "safe" by Officers like Joe and everyone else on the force there. I spent New Years Eve in Myrtle Beach this year, having made my reservation a month in advance, not knowing a tragedy like this would happen only two days before New Years. I could feel the grief within the town, if not spoken, but expressed. But I could also see the light shining down as the rain clouds opened up to sunshine, and the beach was clear. To everyone within the Myrtle Beach PD and Joes family, our thoughts are with you.

Thank you Mrytle Beach Police Department and all law enforcements nationwide for doing a job many of us don't want or take for granted......God Bless All Of You!

Many left reflections for our son at the time of his death. We found such peace in the following verse:

Words can't touch the pain and hurt felt by this community since the tragic loss of Officer McGarry. Things sometimes don't make sense. Why did this happen? Only God knows the answer. We know from our son in law who also a Myrtle Beach Police Officer that Officer McGarry was one of their FINEST! He was born a policeman and died doing what thousands of other police officers do on a daily basis -- he put his life on the line to protect each and every one of us from evil. He will be deeply missed by everyone! Our prayers are with his parents and Holly.God Bless each of you!!

Officer McGarry,
Was a Officer that made time for anyone and everyone that came into his path. He was always willing to go the extra mile to make sure things were done. He loved his job as a Police Officer. He was a big man with the biggest heart. He was a friend and a co-worker. I will surely miss you my friend, but you will never be forgotten. And now you are in Heaven looking down on us, and looking over our shoulders, making sure we are safe. We love you and we miss you.

Words can't describe the feelings we have been overwhelmed with this past week. Our hearts are broken and I can't seem to make any sense out of this. I guess we never will. Joe was a leader and would bend over backwards to help out ANYONE. He never had a bad thing to say about anybody. That is very rare quality that not many people have. It came to him naturally. We will miss you so much Joe. You will forever be in our hearts and our minds. Heaven must have needed a strong, loving, tenderhearted angel to watch over all of us and protect us from above. I pray that Mr. and Mrs. McGarry and Holly will find some comfort in knowing that Joe inspired and left an everlasting impression on everyone he came in contact with. My heart weeps for them. We love you Joe and are very proud and honored to have known such an exceptional individual with a heart as big as the sea.

To the family, friends and especially his co-workers, Joe was a wonderful person, who never passed by without saying hello and giving you a wonderful smile. He will never be forgotten here at MBPD. Flash your wonderful smile for god and the angels Joe and show them your own beautiful soul. You were and are an amazing person and friend to so many of us. We will miss you but you will ALWAYS AND FOREVER BE IN OUR HEARTS. BLESS YOUR FAMILY AND KEEP US ALL SAFE.
