Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God"
Matthew 5:9

The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

My thoughts and prayers are with the wife and small son of Officer Betts. I really cannot find the right words to fill such a huge void that has come into this families life. When I returned home from duty last night I just figured today would be another day. But when I passed the Gwinnett County Sheriffs Office and observed the flags lowered I got an empty feeling in my stomach. The horror of what I have just read about a local young officer is disturbing. All I can say is that the family is not alone, you have an extended family in blue that will always be there for you. I hope that when Officer Betts' son grows up he will understand that his Daddy was a true hero. Rest in peace brother.

Such a horrible, unbelievable sad and tragic incident. My heart hurts badly after reading this. So young with such a young family and around the holidays. Horrible...
To the young wife of Officer Betts; Be strong during this terrible time, I can't imagine your pain. Do not remember Christopher for how he died, but for how he lived his life. That is the true measure of a hero and Officer Bett's died a hero and will always be remembered as such. Never let your young son forget what a great man his dad was and that he was and is: a hero to all of us. May God give you strength and courage. Christopher is watching over you from above as an angel in blue. Rest in peace and God bless you Officer Betts. I will never forget your story. To Officer Bett's fellow officers: stay strong and carry on in Christopher's name.
